Here is what I always tell Chinese students: do not do applied Micro, and if you really want to, do not do it on China. The worst scenario for a Chinese student doing PhD in the US is to do applied Micro on topics about China. Neither Americans nor Chinese will be interested in that kind of research.
Desperate in Chinese Academia

Define applied micro?

That's very sad... As sad as in any other industry in China recently. Because of baby boomer. Population peaked in these years. Everything is competitive. And what make things worse is that deadwood are only 50s or 60s, they can squeeze you for another 10-20 years without any health issues.

is it legal to sleep with your students in China? that can compensate your low salary, though, right?

This. And the students just keep jumping into the applied micro sh**hole.

OP, don't be upset. All kind of industries have demand for people who can think and contribute, when you have a PhD, it is a plus. Look outside of academia, you will find a lot of people who had a USA econ PhD and are doing very well. They may directly join industry upon graduation (like sell side i-bank, buy side asset management, or consulting firm) or spent a few years in academia.
If you think you cannot get the chance, then you have to admit you are too weak and not even as capable as undergrads or master students. It really has nothing to do with your decision to become a doctor, a professor at all. Being a doctor and a professor don't mean anything that you must be successful in your entire life.
Forget about your past, start everything from fresh, industry welcomes you!

In simple terms, don't be a reg monkey or waste time on cutenomics.

It does not make sense. Public and Labor Economics are popular in China.

At least Chinese schools are willing to upgrade the academic performance and give room to productive rookies who can reach their new bar. I know many US schools only hire mediocre rookies who are just as unproductive as themselves, so that they don't feel too bad about themselves.

I don’t know what you are complaining about. Maybe you should move back to the US, but it is pretty much the same thing.
Applied micro. Chinese industry only needs macroeconomists. Also, I have to stay in the current city. So a very binding constraint. I don't understand why so many people including myself are insanely pursuing a tenure position. Most will not get tenure in the end. You should get out of academia in the first place.
It's not as bad as you think OP! There is a long tail of schools in China. Pay is low, but life is okay. If you want more cash and harder work, think outside the box. Amazon hires economists, can you attract interest among tech firms in China? Are you empirical enough, or theory?

Productive "fraudsters" you mean.
