   Agree with d5c9. 9f45 you are very noble to have such a view, but we should strongly discourage professors from taking ideas without giving proper credit. It is very sad that some professors prey on inexperience students to improve their publication record.

   I think this is far, far too generous of you. If they were your ideas, and you know that others took your ideas and wrote them up well, then sure they deserve co-authorship, but equally so do you.
   This is true.
   I am LRM and even while writing my dissertaion i had few good ideas. I barely published a paper from these ideas, because technically i was weak to develop them in a form of well done paper. Neither my advisor did because it was kind of outside of his expertise, but other people who i/we shared thoughts did publish them.
   But again, we should not look into this like stealing , but as a collective effort to increase our knowledge
   For a LRM it makes no sense, since they can't get the paper published regardless of the idea. For a HRM who lacks inspiration, it could be worthwhile.

   i hate when people weasel in on my topic space when i speak freely with them at first. go find your own topics weasel.

   be very careful when you see CVs with no clear direction, these are guys who basically leech from whatever comes their way. also be careful of guys who publish a ton of low quality papers, these are guys who are more willing/likely to take your idea, do a slapdash job, and publish it quickly.

   Time stamps are not enough. Publication process is very flawed. We go from journal to journal.In the meanwhile the paper is out. A connected, famous guy is able to take the main idea, twist it a bit, maybe use a slightly different dataset (imagine CDS data instead of bond data) and can get published.

   I know cases where some bastards kept other people's papers "under review," stole the idea and published at top 3.

   As a young academic, after my own unique idea and work of 6 years has blatantly been stolen I no longer write on my own. I am co authoring with established, moral and smart older people. The s.o.b.'s think twice.

   Easy to say name and shame. Tougher to do. Appeals are useless. The editors at many of the top places are friends with many of these types.

   We write about moral hazard,entrenchment, governance, incentives etc. We should first fix our own f**king publication process.

    If some leaders in the profession are willing to take the lead by establishing a process through which:

    1. Academic idea and work related theft can be presented with certain time stamps( i.e. for example Paper 1's presentation date at Conference X vs Paper 2's; Google Scholar dates, etc.)

    2. Conflicts of interests of reviewers will be investigated (by asking Journal A who refereed Paper 1 and rejected it after a tough review and then who accepted Paper 2 1.5 years later)

    then I am willing to participate in this process. Otherwise the moment I name the names here I am done for.

    Your ideas for a systematic approach is wonderful. Have you considered if you're in a position to do anything about initiating this, or putting it to a trusted person who can?

    Its not as simple as you think. People only want to raise names when they have unequivocal and irrefutable proof and that doesn't really exist. So the victims don't raise their voices (as a false accusation will affect their career) and the people who know what a colleague did don't want to raise their voices because they don't have the proof and don't want a toxic environment. This is something that would create serious divisions and people will take sides and fight each other until someone can irrefutably prove the deed to convince the other guys that they were fed a bunch of lies so that the asshole could get some people on his side.

    I assure you that some top professors (very HRM) know about this and I assure you that some faculty involved with top 4 journals know about this (in fact, if certain events aren't just pure coincidence, they might have even been the instigators).

    I even know of a very big and prominent nobel prize winner who stole the idea of a student who went to his office to discuss research ideas and looking for guys to put on his committee. He told the student that it was a dumb idea and to not talk to him about it again and after a bit the professor published it. The f**ker even had the nerve to come up to me and gloat about the whole story. I really hate some of these guys. I hate them to an extreme that nobody here could ever begin to comprehend.

    I say that there should be a rule that all JMPs and research done by job market candidates that they want to make public around market time must be cataloged and made public by something like REPEC if the student wants to do AEA interviews. Not cataloged => no interviews, its for their own good. Additionally, those papers should define very clearly the participation of faculty and if it will be published in the future in conjunction with faculty to avoid a recurring scam where faculty strong arm their names into student's papers under the threat of rejecting their thesis. If your name is not mentioned in the catalog then you are not allowed to put your name on the student's paper at a later date. I'm tired of the s**t I see happening.

    I thought RePEC had recently introduced this very thing.

    I was accused of this once. However the idea was so ridiculously generic that I didn't even remember the meeting at which the alleged new idea was conveyed.

    Anyway students do sometimes overestimate the originality of what they've come up with. I can't very well avoid an entire area of research on account of that.
