   i get this point, but any kind of policy promoting equal opportunities (including redistributive transfers like you suggest) meets cultural backlash. For example think of the 2008 financial crisis when republicans opposed foreclosure assistance for households. And that had nothing to do with race or gender, just income and leverage basically. Republican political strategy is to turn everything into a culture war.

   Indeed. Whenever I have my doubts about DEI because they sound like ideological lunatic rent seekers, I need only come here to remind myself that the people they are reacting against are even worse.

   This

   DEI will need to exist as long as places like EJMR have trash comments about women and minorities showing the prevalence of rac/ism and se/x/ism. So maybe once you guys get rid of your prejudice, we can make some progress.

   I'd 100% support reparations or UBI to increase equality of opportunity, but I think the culture war stuff at every last possible social interface aggravates people, is objectively inefficient from a social welfare perspective, and is probably a losing political strategy too.

   Yeah, maybe you are right. But I can’t imagine reparations having less backlash than affirmative action. UBI is different, but reparations… I dunno

It went from we must give preferential treatment to women and black candidates to we must hire only from specific groups. One department was restricted to hiring from black and aboriginal candidates. The supply of them in this discipline is almost zero so if you were black and have a PhD in that field, even if there are 1000 better candidates, you were guaranteed a job.

    My university now is telling departments explicitly was race and gender we can and can’t hire. It went from we must give preferential treatment to women and black candidates to we must hire only from specific groups. One department was restricted to hiring from black and aboriginal candidates. The supply of them in this discipline is almost zero so if you were black and have a PhD in that field, even if there are 1000 better candidates, you were guaranteed a job.

    Once again, you all are eliding the difference between your own definition of employment due to merit “merit” and “discrimination” (ie whenever a woman gets a job).

    More importantly, I’m not a self-absorbed baby who thinks the discipline exists to validate my insecurities. We all know the job market isn’t a pure meritocracy, deal with the fact that preferences are going to exist over demographics and stop blaming your failures on others.

    This is completely bogus. Once again, written by a grad student that has no idea how Deans and departments interact—this type of thing would never happen because quotas are illegal. Also empirically there is no university with multiple offers that only hired women. You guys are just upset that women finally are being fairly treated by the profession rather than being actively discriminated against like they were in the past.

    I don’t know what world you guys live in… We made effort to include DEI candidates in interviews and fly out and some time offers (sometime first order, sometime 2nd sent out, sometime third). Of course DEI hire would have made the dean happier but we tried. Some DEI turned us down, some wanted non-academic career, some left for better places. We still end up with 90% male in our department and 85% non-URM…

    So even guys said dean wont let you hire non URM in practice there aren’t that many. So is your dean really okay with a failed search? I don’t think so. I suppose for many you LRMs you may have ended up with non URM, just like us…
