That's literally why my parents justify being awful/stingy as possible towards me -- "low income student succeed so you should be able to succeed in a similar environment."
I'm not kidding when I say they make sure I live like a low income student-- may sound insensitive but anytime they read a case of a "low income student from abusive household succeeds," they try their best to basically emulate that household it seems (or at least use that as a justification for being awful). Unfortunately most student jobs at my school are reserved for those kids (work-study), so I can't even find work to pay off some things like books and phone bills while I'm at school. I understand these kids need money the most, but this puts people like me in a crappy situation where they have no solutions. Never had a birthday party or a Christmas gift growing up, albeit it's def. a first world problem. Parents made me walk long distances to catch a bus at 4 to 5 am to catch a hour and a half long bus (albeit there are kids worse off than me and I should be "thankful," there are definitely kids that have had better lives growing up and my parents could have definitely contributed to making my life marginally better, so I could focus on studies ever since I as young). I used to stay at school until after it closed (like 6 pm) so I could avoid home as much as possible and study in peace. Didn't help that I couldn't even get a flip phone or a functioning computer before college.
While it may seem first world to some, you also have to understand where I am coming from as well. I went to a predominantly high income high school (everyone had macs, everyone had a car, iphone, etc.... other than me) so I was constantly at a disadvantage financially due to my parents choice (i.e. I had to run a R script for homework... and I didn't have a computer I could use to do it... the computer I borrowed from school would constantly crash and eventually a teacher had to bail me out after school). Heck, even in college-- most kids are high income and come from well off, friendly households. Of course, they might have issues with their parents and such, and of course there are also low income students at my school, but I've never heard of anyone going through "financial and mental hardship" enforced by parents to this degree. At least the low income kids got to stay on campus away from the s**tshow and get subsidized macs, etc....
This f-ing guy. Dude many of us come from families that were dysfunctional AND completely oblivious about what higher ed even is. I’m a first gen student and my dad still thinks I’m wasting my time applying for PhDs. My parents have always come in the way of me trying to succeed. Be grateful that you were exposed to higher ed and had someone to look up to while you were building your career path

I didn't live in the district I went to high school. The district that I lived in had an awful school district bc my parents "wanted to live in a newly built neighborhood" (which happened to be right by... a slum). Used to go to school at that district and (may seem like a troll, but whatever) and get constantly mugged by the kids there. Transferred out thankfully to a better school via testing (I am grateful my district had a policy like that), but there I was also disadvantaged in another way. of course I am privileged to have went to a good high school and ultimately go to a decent university, but it's not like my life was sunshine and rainbows
usually my parents would justify any disadvantage I had in assignments and stuff like "in the 70's and 80's in our third world country, we had no computers or phones and I did homework just fine, so you do you. Even if your teacher or peers say you need a new computer, we know you're wrong because we succeeded in those environments"
thankfully before going to college, my uncle who was visiting my family over the summer bought me a computer and a phone at the spot after I told him I had no personal computer or a phone going into college. In hindsight tbh, maybe that was bad bc I ended up discovering the hole known as ejmr (maybe my parents were smart in that regards?), but at least I can run "a" regression on R without my computer crashing....

As someone who was actually low income and inner city, this is exactly what privilege is: coming from wealth and comfort, and thinking that the difficulties that you went to even come close to the domestic violence, poverty, hunger and desperation that many people go to.

the SOP is supposed to be a concise summary of a) your specific research interests and ideas b) your past research experiences
OP, I do just want to say that despite the other comments, I know that what you went through must have been horrible and would have been equally horrible had anyone else here had to experience it. Someone close to me has had to deal with similarly malicious parents and they are still healing the scars in their late 20’s. Maybe instead of talking about sabotage in your SOP, briefly mention how your environment changed when you had to move back home, and that you had a difficult family situation to deal with and had several exams disrupted.
It sounds like what your family put you through when you were young would qualify as abuse. Sure, others may suffer worse circumstances at times, but the fact that horrible things happen to many people does not mean that what you have gone through is not horrible. Domestic abuse is very common, and so are many other things. I wish you all the best and I hope that you yourself strive to break the cycle of negativity, unlike so many commenters here.
OP, dysfunctional parents are all over the place with different problem, often times regardless of their income. And I am sure low income families have more dramas like this bc I am from a low income family and I have seen too many dramas in my life including my own family. My advice is that you basically just write where your motivations come from, whether from life issues or not. But don't make it sound you're too sorry for yourself
