Student here, wondering about salaries for PhDs; what are median salaries for new PhD in:
Top 10
Top 20
Top 50
Government/NGOs
Private Sector
Does salary increase in school rank or vice versa?
Dollar Dollar bill yall
all include summer salary if available (so they are 12-month)
top 10: 150 (almost always includes summer salary)
top 20: 140 (half of the departments offer summer money)
top 50: 110 (rare to offer summer money, at least after the first year)
Gov excluding Feds: 90-100 at the decent places
Feds: 130
Private Sector: 130 (consulting: 150-160, transfer pricing: 110ish)
You're not getting it: the question is, at what salary level is my lifetime income better off getting a masters and going private sector for 4 years when in the counterfactual I would be making shit stipend money as a student for that same time period. As far as I can tell right now, if I don't get into top 20, I might as well just go for the job now.
If you are a phd student in a top 50 (aka a school ranked 60-80) you have no chance of a research job and obviously you have no desire to do research. You might want to consider dropping out asap. Just my opinion.
Needs disclaimer "in the least arrogant way possible", otherwise may be perceived as dickish.
OP here. Can anyone else confirm the distribution from the second post? I'm top 10, but I'm risk averse and I don't want to slum it in Appalachian Podunk State when I could be making 80k+ right now
They have great skiiing and hiking, and a good economics department too. You are a dipshit.
