   Be an economist again, without the girlfriend in grad school (who never became the wife in any case cos I thankfully dumped her before the job market). I probably lost one or two decent papers. The sex was good but she was dumb and didn't like it when I discussed stuff way over her head with others. Cramped my style.

   I would've made sure to focus more on the real stuff, life work, good friends, and good experiences. All the other distractions that didn't last the past decade were a complete waste of time.

   LAC Prof Here: I only earn $85000/9 mth. I make an extra 15-20,000 each year doing consulting/fees/etc. I have enough money to enjoy life with my family (wife works for less). I am happy...very much so. I would do it all over again just for the intellectual stimulation of economics.

   You should start a thread telling how to go about getting involving in consulting. I also make $85k/9, but ordinarily am trying to get summer support for research. How did you go about getting your first consulting thing going, and what steps would you suggest for someone starting out?

   Why so angry about a unilateral dumping that took place a decade ago when you didn't like her to begin with and you dumped her? Extremes of game playing and anger.

   Oh I liked her well enough. She was cute, and funny at times, and made me feel like a big man. But it was a waste of time, and it was the single greatest waste of time in grad school. Probably had some effect on my placement and career trajectory. Too bad I'm ambitious. She would've suited someone else less ambitious and more tolerant.

   Don't get me wrong, I'm not angry. It just popped up as the biggest regret I had in grad school that's all.

   You sound and act angry, so I'm going to call you angry. YOu belittled her earlier, and you describe her as serving a purpose to boosting your ego, neither of which sound like a real relationship to me. And by real I don't mean original or the first or only, I just mean real.

   Btw that is exactly my point. The relationship (and let me suggest here many relationships) aren't actually real. You sound insecure about a relationship you're in. Break it off is my advice.

   Why would I take relationship advice from an angry stranger who has negative things to say about a person he dated 10 years earlier? And who didn't have a real relationship to begin with? I'm not like you.

    Dude, you've got your head in the air. The negative things are objective evaluations of the (nonreal) relationship, if I got angry, she'd know it first, not EJMR hah. Don't get into a panic attack because of it, just forget it all. I don't even know why this is exploding. Peace out.

    ^It's easier to answer the "would I be an economist again" than the others. But yes, I would always choose this life. I needed a PhD in economics to do the sort of research I find meaningful. I got the PhD and I'm doing exactly what I want.

    Is it easier? I'll never choose this career again. Econ is boring and without any intellectual stimulus. No one wants you to really develop new ideas. Just a clever repetition of what your olders said a hundred times (and was wrong a hundred times). Amunition for even more stupid and boring plicy makers who don't understand what you are speaking about. Oh, yes, I publish in A journals and I do make 150K, but it means selling your brains.

    What was the saying: publishing in econ A journals means doing things you don't think are worthwhile doing for impressing people you don't like, or so it goes.

    I second the "should have dumped my girlfriend" guy. I wish I had grown a pair, dumped mine, learned to seduce women, and banged a f**kload of hot undergrads while it was still relatively easy.You've got the rest of your life to be with one person.

    Perhaps I sought safety since grad school was hard. Then again getting a thick skin and social skills is useful in both dating and academics.

    My connections are due to the work networks I had before I went to PhD. Most are international connections and people inside who get work from multilateral banks etc and they outsource to me since they can't get the work done. I cannot say more. I have never done private sector consulting. I have another gig coming up purely because of attending seminars at a certain global body. This one could have even bigger payoff.
