   Yes, many of us got UG degrees in Europe and then graduate degrees in the USA. Some of us think that Europe is good for undergraduate education. We tend to think highly of our schools. There are many good students there. However, 25 years later we all want our kids to attend US colleges. We are ready to pay. We do not want our kids to attend our great European universities for free. Why?

   Because
   1) you don't want them to live on another continent
   2) your kids are American, and think of Europe as that boring place where they sometimes have to go to visit grandparents, so they don't want to go there to study
   3) they're probably more interested in how nice the campus is than in the quality of the university
   Bottom line, not in any way related to the quality of the education they receive.

   My point is that "we" do not want them to study in Europe. I know that they prefer the US. By the way do we really care about continents?

   Europe is not actually a continent. It's the western part of Asia, but they got a good PR team together.

   Better for what? For your own academic/career progression? Some universities are also embedded in a local context and serve to benefit society, unlike the highly tanked business and finance schools that are causing a brain drain.

The set of people who think differently is not empty though. I am there. In fact, my sense of the almost universal preference is that Europeans often look forward to return to Europe to offer their kids a better education, even at cost of lower wages. So it is really strange to read your view. I guess that the set of people that decide to stay in the US long term would have a different view.

    3. As I said - we like our schools back in Europe.

    Now, imagine that your daughter is in Europe where she is receiving a good education after you chose to go back. You may not be aware, but many of her friends will be applying to schools in the US. She will apply as well, may I say, with your encouragement. Let us say that she accepted to UCLA. Will you pay for UCLA or you will tell her to enroll at "Warwick" or "University of Athens?"

    You are assuming an awful lot. Only a tiny minority of European students apply for undergraduate studies in the US. You seem to neglect the fact that the US is not universally seen as an extremely cool place to be anymore.
    We also disagree on your point 1 above but I guess we must agree to disagree as frankly time is scarce to debate that at length. Let us just say that my revealed preference does put a premium on European education of that of the US.

    True: the US is not appealing as much as it used to be for many reasons. However, it is very much appealing to those who have not lived here. Most Europeans today may say something like that: the US is terrible, but I need to be there for "carrier" reasons.

    Yes. Most Europeans have never heard of Norwthestern and would never choose to go there. However, if you go back to Europe you will be in the tiny minority of those who know about Northwestern and you will be facing the dilemma. Your daughter will be at a good place in Europe. It will not be a random place. In that place there will be many students working on their essays and common applications. You will not escape that. When the time comes you will be taking your daughter to the airport so that she can fly to O'Hare and let me say: there is nothing wrong with that.

    I don't think he was hating on NW. It was an example. I my country 99% of the population probably never heard of it. Same for other relatively prestigious places in the US sometimes named here like Dartmouth or Urbana-Champaign (spelling?) or whatever.
    Maybe some people heard about Brown a couple of times in their life, one of which was a joke in the Simpsons when Lisa was desperate at the idea of going there instead of Harvard or something like that.

    The point probably is that, after the very top (Harvard and a handful of others in the US, Oxbridge and -for econ- maybe the LSE) the market is very localized.
    In Europe we are not desperate to be admitted to some US or UK college like people from the 3rd world. Our employers never heard of most foreign Universities except the very top.

    I may be wrong but, if you want to get a job back home, generally speaking a foreign degree like that is actually a BAD decision. Not just not worth it, actually a bad choice. Economists in EJMR are an extremely biased sample in this respect.

    Then, after your bachelor, when you know what you are doing, a master abroad may be a different story.

    And the reverse is probably true. If you plan to get a job in the US, a bachelor from Europe may be problematic, eve if the quality if instruction has nothing to envy to the US.

    Europe vs US education. Quite hard to compare. Education in Europe is knowledge acquisition centered, while in the US it is all about networking and 'campus experience'. Knowledge-wise non-American students from top worlds schools easily outperform their American counterparts especially at undergrad level. However, networks are essential for a good career, so getting an American education could perfectly make sense especially if you want to stay in the US. In fact, American postgraduate education is very valued in Europe too (could be a good idea to do your undergrad in Europe, PhD or a postdoc in the US and then go back).

    In STEM fields BS and MS degrees from top non-US schools are extremely competitive: you will probably have a huge edge over your American counterparts. European PhD degrees from top schools are still quite competitive - you can easily find a postdoc at top US-schools. But at the professor's level networks become essential, so if you aim at academia in the US, at some point it helps to go through the American education system. It could be different in other fields.
