You know, back in medieval times there was no clean water and everyone drank beer or ale. People turned out fine.
Emily Oster, comment?

1) Suppose moderate alcohol consumption by the pregnant mother reduces expected IQ of babies by 5 points. Could you detect this, or would everyone have turned out "fine"?
2) You're confident you know what the incidence of fetal alcohol syndrome was in medieval times?
3) In medieval times, women dying in childbirth was common, and infant mortality was very high. Is this turning out fine?

good grief people. she was denied tenure in a spectacularly public fashion. she has moved on and is contributing in the public sphere in addition to the academic sphere. get a grip on yourselves.
I thought Chicago was pathetic. You are the school of Milt and you get your panties in a bunch over a blog? pathetic

OK, they had a problem back then with water, but now our water is safe. Ergo, why should someone still continue with the bad practice of drinking while pregnant?

In addition to the life expectancy differences everyone has mentioned, historical IQs were literally standard deviations lower than today. So, "people turned out fine" takes a pretty generous definition of "fine".

This is dumb. People do dangerous things all the time. They weigh the risks and benefits. Every time you get into a car you’re risking your life a little bit.
People enjoy drinking. There is little or no risk to very moderate drinking while pregnant. End of story.

What would be interesting to know is actually the counter-factual
Assume Emily has some mild addiction to alcohol, and it helps her being less anxious
given that we know from Class et al (2011 and 2014) that fetal exposure to stress is detrimental, there might be a cost for the fetus to make her stop completely
