BTW, 5 years ago Portugal won the final with a goal from a player that was born in Africa and with solid defending from a player born in South America.
Alright. So they were not European then. They shouldn't have been allowed to compete for Portugal.

I'm not claiming that, although it is partly true. In modern ($$$) football you want someone who will stay in their position and do what they're told, not an unpredictable guy like Maradona.
But that aside, whether or not they're selected for abilities is irrelevant. I will give you another example: the Tour de France was (a long time ago) about French cyclists mostly. And you typically had amateurs, and whenever it was in your region (county) you would cheer for the few local guys. This has been replaced by modern ($$$) cyclists were you can watch drugged-up Americans ride a bicycle worth a Ferrari. So I don't watch Tour de France either.
So I watch Rugby. I did not even watch that game today between England and Italy but I will watch France/Australia playing rugby this weekend.

That's actually true. Italy played well all the way while England coasted in almost every game and were then helped by refs when they couldn't get things done. They even set a record for the team that finished first in a group stage with the lowest amount of goals scored and opportunities created. They literally only scored 2 goals while the teams in 2nd and 3rd scored 4 and 3.
The only surprise was the Germany game where 2 good and experienced central defenders that play at the highest level suddenly started to play like amateurs. I have no idea what happened there but Germany clearly had players trying to lose on purpose to a degree that was absolutely shocking.

Merit is completely irrelevant because the team is not French anymore, and that's the problem.
I'm sure there are tons of African teams where they also select based on merit. But I don't watch the African league, let alone cheer for their teams. -

So if soccer selection based on abilities is irrelevant, you would rather they selected based on race, and select more local people that look like you or people you think are the “true French”? Or better still, an immigrant with the right race that looks like the typical French would be more comfortable for you?
