But they recently got useless econometricians like Francis DiTraglia and Max Kasy!
Exodus from Oxford

Some great insider on this thread! In these circumstances, what sort of profile are Oxford likely to get in the current hiring round? Will those on the market pay attention or will they get a similar quality as usual?
There is a new head of department, so maybe things will change. But as far as I can tell, their strategy is to hire people at associate professor who have already published in ( or who are likely have a fair shot at publishing in) Top 5, and/or who consistently demonstrate papers in top technical fields (e.g. Journal of Econometrics and JET but not outlets like JHE, JHR etc). As far as I can tell, all recent hires over the last several years meet this profile
The issue with their strategy seems to lead to their incredibly high turnover - those who can hit Top 5 will have better offers after a year or two in Oxford, and the teaching/admin burden can be off-putting to some new hires given dual requirements of Department (which cares most about publishing as above and grad teaching and supervision) and Colleges (massive emphasis on undergraduate teaching/tutorials)

Hi Dphil, I'm half you're impressed with a guy that falied tenure at Penn with a JoE in 6 years and another guy that failed tenure at Harvard with his main paper (RESTUD) made void by a corrigendum.
Still, Kasy has some upside. DTraglia on the other hand is a proper lemon. And let's see whether they don't fall into the aforementioned hundreds of hours slaving for a college and become insta-deadwoods

MK is the lemon.

I was more talking about MK. I didn't see this point. But still, even without that, it's 1 Econometrica R&R, 1 AER, 1 JPE, 2 ReStat, 1 ET. It may not make the tenure cut at Harvard, but it's not a failure.

A PhD(c) from LSE got an Associate Prof position at Oxford. Oxford is desperate, giving associate professorships positions to people without publications. So much for a "top" department.
And, still offering free meals as payment:

"Limited financial subvention may also be offered in exceptional circumstances". Sounds like paying a decent salary is modern convention, that a place like Oxford can“t afford ...
