We must hold Shuo Chen to account
Expression of Concern issued by APSR regarding paper by James Kung and Shuo Chen

Wow, this economic historian is really impressive! It seems that he has "economized" history and also "historicized" economics! Unfortunately, the gap between his research results and reality is as wide as the gap between heaven and earth! This reminds me of a saying: fake economic history, real joke!

Did they store the data on a piece of toilet paper? Otherwise I don’t see why they cannot find the data.
Shuo Chen to the toilet
Learned this from Voth, who says he lost the data from his dissertation (and first 30 articles) in a disk crash. Oh my sides.
Nahzy p-hacker

Voth is very active on twitter posts about failed replications. always angling that it doesn't matter as long as the main findings hold. makes me wonder whether he makes up all the secondary results without which a top5 will never accept a paper! maybe that is his MO, get one good result and make the rest of it up to mount the defense: at least the main result holds!

Don't worry, his first-order results are made up as well.

Voth largely doesn't need to p-hack'. His action is upstream as he gets to fabricate data, either outright or by a selective sourcing of the primary sources.

The recent critique shows he does all of this: p-hacks and misrepresents the sources. The source issue has been known for a long time. He published a lot from his dissertation. When people asked for the data he claimed they were lost in a disk crash. He apparently does not own a dog.
