I think the first step involves laughing on your way to the bank.
Failed PhD and how to psychologically and emotionally recover

If you love academia, seriously consider an EdD with an emphasis on accounting, economics, finance. You will be by far the smartest person in the room and make it very well in the end.
It's not the end of the world. Really. No hope at all? Life and attitude changes forever?

First, pop a bottle of shampaign since you did not throw away 6 years of your prime. Then, if you know how to code, browse yclist.com and https://angel.co/jobs to get a feel for the startup scene. Before your cohort can get tenure, you have a decent chance of being a multimillionaire and creating a product that changes the world.

Besides, the majority of people who actually finish their PhD will end up like me - at a below-100 institution with poor pay (relative to the investment), high teaching loads, a mediocre research record, and no prospect of having a family until after tenure. I love my job, but it not what I imagined it would be when I started my PhD, and I imagine I could have been even more satisfied with life had it taken a different course. It's speculation, of course, but failing comps could in all likelihood lead to something better.

It still is not as good as never applying to PhD programs in the first place.

OP, if in your heart of hearts, you want to have Ph.D. in Economics, why not go to a really good Master's Program and reapply to a top notch program. There are no short cuts in life... I think a lot of us had to fill in a lot of stuff once we obtained our Ph.D. Instead, you are doing this thinking in the beginning which will allow you to hit the ground running and make the most of things once that tenure clock starts ticking!
Good Luck, OP!

This is stupid, sorry.

If you have failed because you currently lack the non-cognitive intangibles (e.g., resilience, determination, perseverance) that are both necessary and sufficient for success, then these will only come with more life experience and being in a situation that you find unbearable. If you have failed because you have not been given sufficient time to master the material, then dust yourself off and try again...or become a quant God in a poli sci PhD program.

^sas and sql are about as easy as anything youve had to learn during the phd coursework...
learning how to code doesnt mean learning how to use SQL and SAS. Being good at C, C++ or something low level like wont take a week-end.The former are sufficient for most industry jobs

so long as you do not develop a dependence or addiction, your life will be fine.
it will take longer than you think to recover emotionally and move on mentally.
there are no great jobs, but there are some good ones as long as you have more skills than just stata and excel.
someone above suggested programming, that might be a solution if you have some background.
