It was very well understood 800 years ago that the Earth is round. In fact, it was understood at least 2400 years ago and the circumference of the Earth was estimated fairly accurately at that time.
Ironically, when Columbus sailed, he used a bad estimate of the circumference. He might never have tried to sail west if he had known how far Asia was from Europe. He got lucky.
