Why is he moving? Duke is top 15

Duke is just mediocre in macro. There is a poster who a couple of months ago went crazy arguing how good Duke is in macro. The reality shows that they lost from JHU. Yes family etc matter, but losing to a no place looks bad. If they were good they would lose to Columbia or Penn and not JHU.

But DB just moved a year ago from NW even he got tenured there, Duke was investing to build a solid macro group

That was a soft tenure. Soft = we tenured you to not look back but you are stuck at AP salary + 10% bump and we don't match weaker offers. So a congrats for your Duke offer tenure type of thing. Same for Duke and JHU.

exactly. you don't literally raise everyone's salary. The reason you try to commit to only matching better offers is because if you don't many of your existing faculty will be able to easily raise their salaries.

Did you choose Duke to work with a particular faculty? Were you warned a couple of months ago here that choosing Duke for macro does not make sense because traditionally they are weak?

PSA: never go to grad school hoping that a particular faculty will advise you. Go to schools that they are traditionally (e.g. last 10 years of placements) strong in what interests you and keep an open mind about changing interests along the way.

Great advice. The issue with macro is that few schools have strong faculty- or even more than 2 good macro people- and even fewer place well. Macro is a huge bet on oneself, and is, frankly, a bad bet most of the time.

Definitely loss for Duke but he is now closer to family (he lives in NYC) and lots of $$$. Likely Duke didnt match because schools dontt typically match lower ranked departments

A few people at Duke do similar things. It’s particularly bad because the drive from the airport to Duke and back stinks. I haven’t been there for a bit so my knowledge isn’t current, but it used to be better just to rent a place for teaching semesters

You have to handle 40 and the left merge by quintiles which makes it a 45 minute trip circa 2015-2018. Did they finish construction on 147? That didn’t help,
