I don't recall any recent top 20 hire who bombed so badly, say over the last ten years. Absolutely zero publications.
Rafael Lopes de Melo and Thomas Baranga were very good lemons back in the days

He did nothing. Aruoba brought him to Maryland because they had the same adviser. He was never good enough, and Aruoba is not the right guy to build a department.
Not really. Akcigit pushed him so much to prove himself to Penn faculty. Faculty members were too concerned about Akcigit’s ability to place students at that time.

Isn’t that very obvious? Why does he leave Maryland?
It's really not. I'd rather live in DC suburbs than Richmond, VA.
Look at his CV.
It's complete ass? What am I supposed to see in this CV. Also wtf. How does he have 0 publications 6 years after graduating from Penn? Is this what Penn students are like?
6 years can go by so quickly in academia. Teaching, advising (and some factors unobserved by us) consume some time too. Trying to get a top 5 for tenure, unsurprisingly, will lead to zero pubs eventually. (Perfect is the enemy of good!)
If he tried macro dynamics or journal of macro instead, he would have a zillion publications by now.
Felipe Saffie was promising when he graduated from Penn. He is a talented person but he needs to work harder. I know coauthors of his that have been waiting a long time for him to deliver his share of the work. He needs to get his *** in gear.
Felipe Saffie has good potential, but was unfortunately placed in an abusive environment managed by Aruoba and Kalemli-Ozcan. When you're swamped in a huge work load of teaching, advising and services, there's just no much effort left to put into publishing.
Glad that he's given a second chance and hope he'll finally thrive!

He is there because of Aruoba. The guy is lazy. Get real!
