Fields Medals predictions for 2022?
-
All 4 winners are deserving. This is a reasonable year with no big surprise or controversy.
No controversy here. The committee chose one medalist that had another cycle of elegibility, as was the case in 2018. Discrete mathematics gets its long awaited recognition in the award of JH.

This cycle was a popularity contest.
No Thorne, no Bhatt, no Tsimerman.
I thought 2018 was bad, and this was worse.Look on the bright side: Almost every paper of the four winners are almost fully understandable to almost every mathematician. When was the last time you can say this?

I thought 2018 was bad, and this was worse.Thorne and Tsimerman can (and at least one if not both will, IMO) win in 2026. As for Bhatt not winning, you can blame Scholze.
you can also blame scholze for bhatt's popularity

I thought 2018 was bad, and this was worse. Are you suggesting certain people won only because of the areas they work in?
yes
That is to be expected to some extent though. There will be a natural desire to include a diversity of different research areas.

The selecting committee has a bias against Chinese mathematicians.
There's been 2 cycles where several who were eligible for the FM, have not been chosen.
These are Math breakthrough prize winners like Wei Zhang, Yun, Xu, Qinwen and not to forget Song Sun too.
I suspect if there were several French mathematicians who were in a similar position for at least 2 cycles, one of them would have won definitively.
Do they think they are cheating or copying or something? Lol

Do they think they are cheating or copying or something? LolI agree that it's surprising that none of them won. More so in 2018, when I thought Wei Zhang was one of the most likely candidates after Scholze. Sun could still win in 2026.

If Wei Zhang had been a few months younger, he would certainly have won the medal.
