Top candidates clear later because they get given a longer leash and have more to choose from. The schools that suffer are the rank 10-30 schools who try for these candidates: they usually lose, and so the cost of being out of the market is that they pick up mediocre people most of the time.

^ Since Stanford dominates Columbia and Wharton these two are unlikely to get either Breza or Bernstein. However, they may have made other offers, they may still make offers, or they may go into the secondary market. With DP off to the LSE, Columbia probably wants to hire an empirical person.
