Could you please rank these three options for pursuing a PhD in Finance?
Finance PhD: UT Austin v/s UNC v/s Maryland

Why don't you consider USC?
You troll, but this year USC finance placement has been better than of all these 3 schools but then again 1-2 year doesn't make a trend.
I never understand the USC trolls and what they are trying achieve. USC is an rapidly improving MRM which is never going to be HRM in this lifetime or even next. But are these trolls actually USC people with low self esteem trying to make themselves feel good or are they USC saboteur who just trying to make fun/jealous of USC's effort.

All very comparable MRMs in term of PhD and placement but if you had to pick one, I'd say UT Austin marginally better than rest
UT Austin hired a 9th year lemon with no pubs or even R&R from LBS who was their 3rd choice(which signals to you that not a lot people rank UT Austin that highly), another has hired a oversold pajeeta from Columbia(which tells you that UNC faculty are very meek and buy ehatever HRMs are selling). Maryland did well this year in those regards

UT Austin rankings has been majorly dictated by ST/LS good work over last 1.5-2 decades and if you manage to make one of them your advisor it bodes well for your PhD and placement but from what i know, either of them dont work with PhD students that much anymore. Whereas UNC PhD students get a lot more handholding which helps the median student to develop as a researcher but they tend not to do so well at placement as department doesnt have pushy approach to job market which has become a necessary evil these days.

Yeah the LBS guy is certainly comes across as a lemon oversold by VV but the rookie AP hiring process is always noisy. UT Austin is still a solid department and it's not like HRMs dont hire lemon every now and then(e.g. Columbia, Wharton, HBS etc)

When will ST and LS retire? They have to be over 70

They still seem to be quite active research wise.
