I flunked out of HRM PhD due to mental health issues i was unemployed for a couple of years. I'm looking to make a fresh start. Is it worth it looking into getting a lighter PhD (finance, accounting) at lower ranked schools?

I was in a similar situation OP.
If its any help im in a HRM policy PhD program and previously failed out a VLRM PhD Econ. Assuming you have a decent profile and have tried to keep active in the field by keeping memberships at various economic associations and have done some non degree math coursework you have a great shot.
Dont give up, i believe in you.
