Is everyone here really that computer illiterate? What he is describing, or the way he is trying to bait you into interpreting what he is describing, is not technologically feasible.
Forget this Ederer thing

What's distressing to many, at least to the people I talk to, is how the profession seems so happy with this semi-legal vigilante justice initiatives. It's much bigger than this absurd website. Even if this particular incident turns out to be a prank, the norms are shifting in a very perverse direction.

This. We all know that there are many in the profession with very bad attitudes about free speech, but to see just how widespread the cruelty and desire to punish those who disagree with you actually is, well that's just depressing AF.
Make note of who celebrated this. And avoid them as much as possible.

It's basically just two rtarded trolls talking to each other on every thread.
One says "Oh my god is this possible? Can someone explain what an IP is?"
Another says "Didn't you realise that Google collects data on you? You're all doxxed."These two trolls are FE and PGP. Given that they live online and one of them is unemployed, this seems likely.

FE and PGP are most likely obsessed with EJMR and have become mega trolls by now.

Everyone will publicly tell you that this "doxxing" is great for the profession. They they will all go home and post junk from behind a VPN.

Read the abstract of their paper carefully. They're able to identify posts "originating" in universities etc. They're clearly able to identify a lot more than what people here can realize.
Through what mechanism, specifically, would they be able to obtain "a lot more than what people here can realize"?

By identifying the IPs. Otherwise they wouldn't have talked about "contributors" and only talked about institutions.

That sounds a lot like obtaining information illegally

Also, if all this was technologically impossible, Kirk would have said that clearly. He's only made brief evasive statements and scrambled to make changes to the website (removing geld/delete option, disabling older pages etc). Clearly there is some loophole in the security of this website that they have exploited.

Its not. Look at another thread that gives a link to IRB guidelines about social media research.

It's a legally gray area. Things of this sort end up being legal or not depedning on political factors exclusively. This is why it's important that we are prepared to act, whatever it takes.
