There is massive gender bias in the profession:
1) I know of now many departments -including my own - in which we are told we cannot hire male. We can only hire women.
2) please check the cvs of ERC grant recipients in Europe. You will see for yourself the extent of bias there. I am not aware of similar data for NSF but I am told by colleagues who have reviewed the situation is even worse.
3) I have seen conferences enforcing 50/50 acceptance despite submissions that were closer to 80/20.
4) I have had one editor of a very good (not top5, but top10 journal) telling me that HE explicitly tries to publish more papers written by women as his field is very male dominated.
