As a non-white non-URM man, this is doubly painful because I am being punished for the discrimination of old white men who also discriminated against my grandparents generation.
Gender imbalance in flyout
-
VLRM search here. The search committee was pretty unanimous that the male on the flyout was our top candidate but the close second was female. She got the offer. But we will probably lose out to an ULRM or LRM. Only then might we make an offer to the guy. But we might fly out another woman instead.

I wonder what the reaction would have been. I.e. the tables were turned and the close second male got the offer?

I interviewed at 4 places that overlapped with two other female candidates in my department. We are in the same field. They got the flyouts, I didnt. All 3 of us are similar in ability and are being sold at the same places (hence the interview overlap).
I interviewed at some places where the interviewer were active econtwitter users who advocated for females in econ. I knew i didnt stand a chance at those places1) "All 3 of us are similar ability" classic male over-confidence. Maybe, uhm, they thought the women were better?
2) 2 other female candidates could only have taken 2 of those other places. So the other 2 you didn't get because... why again? This is not hard. Women might get a bunch of flyouts or offers but in the end will only take 1 position each, and will still be a minority of all slots. It really isn't going to change your chances all that much. The market is not continuous. If a woman takes a position at rank 20 that a male candidate was being considered for, that doesn't mean that candidate will drop to rank 21 then 22 and so on. That candidate's next best flyout could be at rank 60 or lower. For many candidates whose best flyout is not even in the top 100, the next best could be a super low ranked school or non-academic position.
Also as an insider at top 50 US, you guys truly have no idea how bad it is. Our target is to flyout candidates at a 3:1 female to male ratio just to get a decent shot at hiring a woman. The problem is that all the schools are adopting similar strategies and the supply side hasn't adjusted yet so there's only so many competent women to go around. This is usually the only reason why we still hire men. Once the supply side adjusts and there are more female candidates, then men are truly fieked. You are too optimistic, my VLRM flew out 10 women and 0 men, just to be sure. The irony is they told us that does not mean there is any intention of lowering the standards of hiring. I loled badly: You pick from 25 percent of the population and keep quality fixed... Tells you just how UVLRM we are

Shut up, and try to improve your personality.

Equality of opportunities + heterogeneous agents = heterogeneous outcomes
Enforcing equal outcomes to heterogeneous agents = good, old communism
And by heterogeneous agents I don't mean at all heterogeneous skills, but purely heterogeneous preferences.
Let's all work to guarantee equality of opportunities (which I always thought we were getting pretty close), but why to go in this direction?
I love research and I love this profession, but I'm completely terrified that so much wise, well-thougth people can get to this point of intolerance, unfairness, and stupidity. Plus, if I were a woman I would be truly offended if I'm given an advantage purely based on my genitals.

I like all the pontificating about how broken our profession is by people who ignore every single piece of data that does not fit in with their predetermined narrative. From the looks of it, there are plenty of schools that did not make gender a priority even if there are some who do. Ex.
Top tier LAC, flew out 8, 2 F 6 M.
Is there a desire to hire quality people from underrepresented groups? Absolutely. Is there an economically justifiable foundation for this? Absolutely... ever heard of aspirations? Or have the notion that it is easier to aspire to the path of someone with similar observables as you? Well without rebalancing obviously racist/gendered hiring practices of the past (<50 years removed from equal employment protection being codified in law), how could we ever have such representation? Is it dynamically efficient to change a poor status quo? Not always, but the argument is about short run dynamic inefficiency and not a long term communist restructuring of society. If you're being pinched on the market, just do what women and URMs did in the past and "be better" than your favored peers.

No surprise this is coming from the political left. It is so obviously marxist.
Garbage human.

To anyone who is actually successful, needing "role models" is laughable.
I'm from a small country in Eastern Europe, born before the wall fell. How many people do you think there are like me in the top ten faculty? And do you think I ever cared?
People with vision just do things, they don't care whether a clone of them has ever done them before.
