We interviewed a near equal mix for our first-round (28 total, 15M, 13F) and honestly, only 1 guy made it to the top 10. Obviously a non-random draw, but it was a cattle-call applied micro position so its not like we had a narrow field that is dominated women. Just far and away the female candidates seemed much more comfortable discussing their work, having a conversation, asked good questions for us, and thought well on their feet. Most male candidates treated us like we were just one of many interviews they had and did no homework on our department. Like they were doing us a favor even though two of the interviews were courtesys because they didn't have many (according to connected advisors).
Last year, I was reported to HR for interviewing mostly male candidates. This year, I was instructed to ignore schools, because only privileged ones can go to good schools, so I am eliminating minorities indirectly. I am also asked to ignore GPAs, again because only non-minorities have the resources to be successful. Needless to say, this year I ended up hiring two mediocore RAs, but I could not care less.
