Gossen Preis to Davide Cantoni.
Sehr gut!
What about all the guys who dominate Cantoni and are also under 45? Like the stars in Zurich (Scheuer, Yanagizawa, Dorn etc.)? Even within his field, Waldinger>>>Cantoni, and Waldinger is under 45. Seems like a pretty corrupt decision!
far from clear that Waldinger >> Cantoni

and imo Cantoni's research is not as narrow as Waldingers
Cantoni’s best work is always with many coauthors who are much stronger than him (Yuchtman, Yang, Acemoglu). That suggests he’s mostly an RA.
Waldinger by contrast has single-authored work that is very good.
I would also say Yanagizawa clearly dominates Contoni within his own field (history/political economy).
The award seems hard to justify except that Contoni is better connected in Germany.

But Cantoni has the stronger marketing game. Which is what I guess you learn from working with guys like Yuchtman and in particular Acemoglu. Just stating this as a fact, not suggesting I like it.

Hard to see that. If you ask around internationally, Yanagizawa would be much higher regarded than Contini (and so would be Waldinger). So if anything they are more successful at marketing. The VfS might be the only committee that disagrees. Which doesn’t speak in favor of it...
Who cares about economic history At All? Irrelevant subfield.

QJE editors care, apparently .
Do I care what QJE editors care about? Have some own economic problems to work on.

The Stolper price goes to the economist with the most international impact. Cantoni sparked the Hong Kong protests with his experiments. Taking on China like that is what I call true impact and thus he is very deserving of the price.

Disagree. Cantoni is certainly more than deserving of this price and is among a dozen plus German guys working in Germany that currently have international visibility. His work is careful and he plays a positive role in pushing the quality of research over here
I am not convinced about this RA theory either: First, how do you know who contributed what. Second, his recent AfD piece had a big impact without any US coauthors.
