The faz article supports a4e5's priors about Ausländer and is therefore the better one. Duh.

I really don't see any difference in the tone

certainly a troll but... as a case study it's somewhat interesting... if you look at the four econ profs in Ingolstadt (at least I count four) then I see one guy from that glorious generation of Homburg and Lucke without an online publication list and three younger people (AD, DL, SW) who each have their +-three publications in strong international journals (JEEA, JPubE, JHR, EJ...), certainly the combination of the Exzellenzinitiative, the Handelsblattranking and increased pressure due to fewer jobs... if you go to Munich or Mannheim or something, you will certainly have an easier start in academic life... but in principle, if you have the feeling that one of those three is the right teacher for you and you see yourself really developing there... then why not... but: 1) in Ingolstadt you really have to be the best, no excuses, in Bonn you can be number 4 and still be on an excellent track... to some extent it's a matter of personality which of those roles you prefer ... 2) don't even think about staying in Ingolstadt for a postdoc when the time comes

I am and I cannot remember that the VfS asked me before it gave its statement. What shocks me, however, more after reading it, is that it is not properly discussing the trade-offs (which is what economists should do).
Certainly, noone likes schools to be closed or kindergadens, or theaters, or not shake hands or visit friends or go out for a beer. Problem is that is all banned for a reason. All this opening debate just argues as if restrictions were imposed for the fun of it. This way, VfS goes fully Homburg.

I am a bit surprised, too. There are three issues I guess: first, the members were not asked. Second, as fe72 wrote, the trade-offs were not discussed in more depth. Third, it could be interpreted as political, as Rudi Bachman wrote on twitter ("Hiermit wurde der VfS nun wirklich politisiert.")
About the first: In the end, it's NFS name on the document. It says "VFS represented by NFS". That makes it a bit less problematic. But still it's a bit weird.
Second: While the trade-offs are not discussed in details, I think this document has a clear pitch: so far, there was rather little focus on the costs of school closures etc. The document points out many issues that actually (at least imho) have received far too little attention. The document is not stupid in that it says "I do not want any measures against corona". It just says that we have gone a bit too far in terms of school closures and Kita closures. then they point out that the evidence seems to suggest that kids are less of a driver for Corona than adults -- I cannot judge whether this is true, but form what I read on it so far, this was also my laymen impression. More importantly, they point out to all the costs. Some of the costs are clearly economic concepts and therefore it does make sense that the VFS points them out.
Third: I would not say this is political. It's indeed a lot of empirical evidence of economists that points out how important early childhood education but also school education is. And it is our duty as economists to explain this. Most people in the population (in particular those without kids and older ones) still tend to think "oh, this ain't that bad if the kids are a bit out of schools. Other generations also had a hard time and everybody has to pay a price for Corona".
So while this whole thing is not optimally framed, I generally would say it does not have a political message but a scientific one.
Disclosure: I am a parent and may be biased.

1) NFS could have signed this as a professor but this was signed by VfS represented by NFS. I would like to know whether there was at the very least a vote by the VfS council on this.
2) This was not written as a scientific statement, urging policymakers to consider, including those cited in the open letter. Instead the letter recommends a certain political action and only lists arguments in favor of that action.

This and, therefore,3) Rudi is right: NFS politicized the Verein for her personal agenda.
