You don't need to go that far up, though. In any country, 97% of the university presidents (3% econ-background economists excluded) don't give a f*** about top 5.
Of course, if you want to become a de facto politician as our top economists at diw etc, you may not care. However if you want that people in your field take you seriously you better publish well.
I see also a Trend that even in Germany or generally in Europe top 5 become a necessary.

Zum Thema Wiss...gesetz: Alles egal, Arbeiten an der Uni bleivt Schlaraffenland, wehrmutstropfen, befristete Verträge. Aber das mekern ist schon taff. 95% der Uniforschung ist Kulturgut und bringt kein höheren Nutzen. Ähnlich wie in anderen Sparten der Kunst und Kultur, gibt es mehr die das möchten als die Gesellschaft sich das leisten will. Wenn wir das mal akzeptiert haben, hier im Elfenbein, können wir selbst unsere Institute und Stellen besser ausgestalten!Danke. Genau so ist es. Ich fühle mich absolut privilegiert mit all dem im Endeffekt sinnlosen BS, den ich an der Uni "erforsche". Das ist ein reines Kulturgut ohne großen Nutzen für die Gesellschaft.
Wenn ihr schon selbst merkt dass es BS ist, ist es eine Schande dass ihr noch dabei seid. Ihr habt die Möglichkeit sinnvolle Grundlagenforschung zu betreiben. Es gibt genügend wichtige Fragen die nicht hinlänglich bearbeitet werden. Wenn du merkst dass du dafür zu dämlich bist ist es Zeit deinen Hut zu nehmen.

Sure but outside the small econ bubble no one gives a flying f**k about an article in the top 5. They know it's merely a career thingy. The implications are so slim that they don't bother paying attention.
You all know how Falk's coauthors have gotten their "top5". One dedicated coauthorship gives multiple job offers in Germany. Completely insane.

Ist ein guter und wesentlicher Punkt. Alles was spezifisch für die Deutsche Ökonomie ist lässt sich sehr schwer international gut veröffentlichen. Gilt ja auch für Euro-Area economics. Damit geben wir also Ökonomen an DE Unis Anreize über US Probleme zu forschen.

klar ist es peinlich wenn jemand die Nase extra hoch traegt nur weil er/sie fuer einen bekannten Autor Daten gereinigt hat
oefter kommt es aber vor, finde ich, dass Alte mit C pubs an Jungen mit A pubs kein gutes Haar lassen. das ist schlecht fuer die Anreize in der oekonomischen Forschung in Deutschland (und Europa generell)
