   Most stupid comment of the week. Congratulations!

   SH made a major career change being only 30 just after getting tenure in Bonn anyway, no longer wanting to be an economist prodigy in academia. Instead, he made a fortune as a tax consultant (working with several billionaires). Not bad either.

   fits the picture quite well. his economic reasoning is as bad as the economics in the termsheets of tax carousels. personally, if i was one of his clients, i would rather get my tax advice from an experienced investment banker who has the true skill of avoiding taxes without facing any legal downside.

   why? u simply go to addresses such as zzz wealth management. they can do this 10x better than homburg. they know stuff that german law firms and german tax advisers have never even heard of. the problem is rather that regional clients like rossman dont trust those kind of bankers and therefore rather go to people like homburg.

   Bonn never understood much in the Macro-Finance space. Game Theory and Mechanism Design is the only thing Bonn ever practiced at a respectable international level. This is possibly the reason why Homburg got away with tenure there.
   I glanced over his paper "What Caused the Great Recession?". He claims that he can distinguish between different possible causal explanations of the great recession that followed the financial crisis 2008-2009. Anyone skilled in Macro knows that the field is far away from being able to distinguish between different causal explanations that can generate the same key observations. Anyone skilled in Science knows that effectively we have a unique historical observation here (that is not comparable to the 1929 recession just for the fact that there was no shadow banking in 1929) which may mean that even in 100 yrs you will not be able to answer that question.
   In his case, all 5 models ('hypotheses' is the wording he uses) make the same prediction of a recession. All 5 explanations are highly stylized and inconsistent with the data in various dimensions. He then cherry picks a single inconsistent dimension for each of 4 models and (falsely) excludes these models from being possible explanations.
   For example, he claims that credit crunch is not the explanation for the recession because it is inconsistent with observation that "bank credit surged rather than plunged before and during the recession". What he forgets to say is that, although his statement is empirically correct, there is another real world layer -- central bank interventions -- which may have inflated measures of bank credit. Yet, the credit crunch was still a reality for millions of consumers and firms. Also, he cannot know what the recession would have looked like had bank credit surged by less or more.
   I give this guy credit for disliking DSGE research, he ends up making the same mistakes. Overall, not a surprise to see something like this from Bonn.

   German macro is awful. Is a shame.

    I have told my mother that economists do not address any real world issues, but try to be fancy.

    - A good theorist is not good because his work is realistic - his work needs to be interesting and appealing.
    - A good empirical researcher uses a clear and often innovative identification scheme. Nobody cares about the content of the analysis. Besides, nobody cares about external validity.

    Economists need to reconsider these things instead of focusing on "paper mills" or other fraudulent practices. Otherwise I have to agree with Zingales and also to convince my mother that "Economists’ trespassing into political decision-making has grown so much to become dangerous"

    How many positions for post-docs or phd students typically come with a W2 or W3 chair in Germany? How is this determined - purely negotiated, internal rules relating to success and student numbers, or are these positions 'inherited' as they are permanently part of a chair?

    Normally it is like this: No internal rules relating to success or number of students and no inherited positions. Usually, departments have a typical number of positions for a W2 or W3. This would be their initial offer, may 0.5 positions less than the typical number. You then start to negotatiate. If you later get another job offer, you would renegotiate and they would offer you more positions.
