   My recommendation is: work on topics that are also interesting for business departments (applied micro, finance), most business APs are leightweights, should be a lot easier to get a position as a business admin prof.

   this sounds like a good recommendation. i think it is also a lot easier to become a business prof at a top german university (such as mannheim) than becoming an econ prof. if you have one or two decent publicatione (say in jfe or journal of marketing) you immediately get a lifetime position...

   There are now many finance professors who have an econ background: Laux,Inderst, Kubler,Maug,Hakenes,Schnabel..
   Same holds for Management/HR: Friebel,Kosfeld,Irlenbusch,Sliwka and more.

   ^ there is no such thing as Assistant professor in Germany. There are just Assistants & Junior Professorships. The later are usually better, as they involve longer term contracts and better research support. Moreover, you have no boss whereas as an assistant you might be the slave of a Professor...

   Assistant professors ("Juniorprofessoren" in German) are better paid than postdocs (in part because the former are civil servants while the latter are not). On the other hand, assistant profs may have to teach more than postdocs that are financed by, say, the German Science Foundation. If you are at a top place such as Mannheim, you will certainly not be a slave either way.

   overall, it is different to the US. There is no tenure. Assistant Professors will have to move on in any case in most places. There is no chance of staying on.

   Some info on ESMT:

   1. Interesting-bearing endowment is about 120 million euros (close to that of INSEAD, among the highest in Europe).

   2. The school has strong backing from industry, both as funders and as clients for executive education. A number of chairs are financed by industry (such as that recently obtained by Heidhues). The industry connection is a source of stability.

   3. The MBA program is very young and still fledgling. It's not yet eligible to appear on a number of key rankings, but this is just a matter of time. The stats of the MBA cohort (GMAT and placement record) are not far below those of Mannheim. The MBA program aims at the international market, both in terms of attracting students and in terms of placing them.

   4. While the MBA program is bleeding cash, non-degree executive programs are not. In fact, ESMT is in Germany leading in non-degree executive education (ranked by FT around top 30 in the world and top 10-15 in Europe; Mannheim did not appear in these rankings). In terms of total revenues (what really matters), ESMT is not in the red -- but doing quite fine.

   5. ESMT aims to be a research-driven business school. Why else would they hire a fairly senior theorist like Heidhues? (He is tasked to develop the PhD program; ESMT has PhD students, PhD fellowships, and Phd courses, but lacks the right to grant PhDs, a formality to be cleared soon; at present PhDs are granted through an arrangement with Humboldt).

   6. ESMT houses a competition consulting group, "Competition Analysis" (CA; a creation by Roeller). This group is ranked among the top 20 in the world, and they work closely with faculty. Faculty can earn teaching points by working on CA projects. CA also is a stable source of revenue.

   7. By discipline the faculty may at present appear unbalanced. This is probably more telling of the school's stage of development than it is of school's priorities of disciplines.

   8. ESMT will hire quite aggressively in the future. There is no longer a reasonable question of ESMT survival; it's about pace of development.

   9. Near-future areas of strength likely are to be IO and strategy.

   So, if you happen to have an interview with ESMT -- Merry Christmas to you!

   ^^ Since you are clearly from ESMT, can you say something about junior hiring targets? Are you trying to attract more non-German speaking faculty, in particular from the top (US) PhD programs? Because I imagine that your typical applicant is still Germans applying from German programs or possibly returning from the US.

    about ESMT.

    I know for a fact that they chose the wrong people to interview in Denver. They prefer to interview average students from top US places than outstanding students from all other places. Of course, even the average student from a top US place gives a shit about ESMt.

    As far as I know Tatur is still at Bonn. Tatur is associated with the Chair "Wirtschaftstheorie III", which is Avner Shaked's old Chair, but Tatur is NOT the chair holder. Bonn is still trying to fill the position (as so many others)....

    ^^ ESMT - why do you say you know this for a fact? It sounds plausible to me, since they have a credibility problem and probably want to demonstrate they can hire "top people" ... But I have no first-hand contact with them.

    ^ESMT pays very competitively. In real terms you easily make a U.S. b-school salary there. ^^^^^how do you know this "for a fact"? They are trying to build a brand. Of course they need to hire people from Harvard, MIT, Chicago, Stanford to do that. Some obscure, maybe smart dude from Mannheim or Toulouse won't help with that.
