ESMT is never gonna get people with decent US options. Why would you go to a struggling business school with zero reputation? Hence their choice is between (1) sorry-ass lemons who can't convert 30 interviews that their placement officer got them into an offer and (2) people from Europe and low-end US programs whom nobody has time to interview because they need to accommodate (1). You're bound to find better researchers among (2), but I'm not sure better researchers is what ESMT needs right now.

ESMT will not even be able to hire TOP 10 lemons as they are absorbed by TOP 100 US schools. ESMT can only hire top Europeans by attracting them with high wages, research prospects and connection to industry. I won't lie I am really interested in this place but their ridiculous attempts to build up their reputation with interviewing TOP 10 US guys makes me believe that they will never make the turnaround. For heaven's sake, I know people (European PhD's) who have plenty of Top 50 US interviews but ESMT is not considering them....it is absurd.

it's exactly the pathetic kind of activity that new founded business schools in Germany engage in before they go under after a few years. Just case number 67.

"top ten lemons are much better than mannheim superstars."

hardcore bullshit

even worse. Berlin is by far the hottest city in the world right now and has surpassed NYC,London and Paris years ago. Living in Berlin and earning a good wage is a very attractive bundle these days, many people would easily prefer that to an LSE,UM or Yale offer (however, maybe not the nerds who actually get these offers). Career isn't everything.

Berlin is on par with Amsterdam as a place to live, not with NYC, London, Paris. But I'm glad some people are enthusiastic about ESMT (even if it's possibly their own employees posting to cheer themselves up). It makes me more optimistic that the place can attract / hold on to some people.

3ffd has a point. Berlin is an awesome city, pretty much on par with London and Paris, but with very reasonable cost of living. With a business school salary your quality of life in Berlin would be very high. i'd surely turn down a lot of american top 50s outside the big metros for that.
-
let's look at the junior people working at ESMT. How many do you think did actually get offers from a TOP 50 school in a big metro?? My guess is zero.
And I am not denying that Berlin is exciting. But ESMT is in a creditability trap and the way they act will not able to leave it.
