   In terms of costs of living, diversity of people, nightlife (Berghain is Studio 54's wet dream (let alone Bar25), but there are also lots of operas,theaters, art exposition venues, concert halls, museums etc) Berlin is way before all other cities. But there is also so much subculture going on there, it is just amazing. Just go to Berlin and ask people why they moved there. There are ten thousands of people flying in each weekend just for recreational purposes, living in Berlin is like living in a holiday resort, just at very nice costs.

   Especially Paris lost so much to Berlin in the last decade.

   Paris, NYC and London may be nicer for old people, but for people at the age of a junior scientist, Berlin is superior (average preferences assumed).

   ^what's a creditability trap? and how are they acting (other than presumably not interviewing you). are you extrapolating from one data point? seems to they are doing the right thing: buying decent people with increasingly reputable acadmic backgrounds. or asked differently what do you recommend they should do since you seem to be having issues? (and no, I am not their staff. i'm not even german. just curious)

   I have a feeling that ESMT has repeatedly failed to get the kinds of people they wanted: good quality with top degrees. They weren't gettable and they aren't gettable, but ESMT has had to accumulate teaching staff in the meantime, and now they feel the pressure to finally deliver the goods in hiring. They just can't afford any more compromises, but that makes it very tricky to hire.

   3ffd, Berlin = holiday resort!? Ha ha, you must be the first person in history to ever have made that connection. A holiday resort is what people escape to as soon as they have a couple days off in Berlin.

   What they need are people that identify themselves with the idea of having a top business school in Berlin and NOT decent people who go to Berlin to spend the ridiculous salaries in nightlife. ESMT is like a soccer team with overpaid decent players who failed in other teams....no substance...

    ^I know quite a few top 10 US profs who spend their ridiculous salaries on nightlife and still do well. I think the hiring problem in economics is similar for all top European places. LSE may be more established but they always lose out to america when it comes to hiring so they have less than a handful of good people who want ot be in London for idiosyncratic reasons and a bunch of ok-decent people. esmt has the advantage that they at least have money (unlike LSE, who just can't pay what it takes to get good people).

    ^ Are you sure that ESMT is flush? From what I hear, they don't have anything like the anticipated revenues from tuition. Surely, there is a limit to how long their sponsors will foot the bill.

    regarding lse and esmt: lse is a top15 department, esmt not even top100. full professors at lse are very well paid. most likely not worse than professors in top us departments.

    Not the guy "with issues" here, but someone who also agrees that ESMT is not making all the right moves.

    Other European places wanting to climb up the ladder have tried to make use of their ability to pay more than most European schools to poach the underplaced Europeans that have consistently published in good journals. Such people would not feel they are bigger than the institution (as someone from a top 10 US school would), contribute to the place and in the end it's publications, not the place of PhD that make a school's reputation. Heidhues is an example of this: well-published, stuck in Bonn on an Associate Prof post and happy to go to Berlin. Why hire some mediocre rookie or a guy who was turned down for tenure at a top 10 place if you can get someone like Heidhues?

    I am sure there are plenty of people like that in Netherlands, Spain, Austria etc who would jump at the chance of leaving for double the salary to a nicer, cheaper city to a school that places very high value on research (which not all European schools do, making researchers there look like fools).

    What surprises me even more is that Roeller knows everyone in Europe in IO and is not well-connected in the US. Why does ESMT not make use of this asset?

    Finally at this stage they need people who want to contribute to the institution not suck it dry before they more on to the next place. a top 10 reject in unlikely to do that.

    Funny how you feel this was a Bonn v Mannheim thread. ESMT featured before Bonn/Mannheim in this thread. I know there is a law that says every German thread should be about this, but...
