   The best strategy to get out of a teaching school is to apply for early tenure & simultaneously shop around after three years.
   Two people I know moved out at the end of year 4 and got a $50K bump.
   Staying at teaching public schools is not worth it anymore as the real wages keep going down and you will be forced to work two jobs eventually.
   Tenure at a teaching school is a guaranteed life time poverty contract.

   160k for 9 mo is hardly poverty

   most 3-3 schools pay around 140k without any summer support. after tax & health insurance & pension contribution, that will be around 8k per month. most people have to pay mortgage and property tax, which are about 3k per month. so 5k is left for everything else.

   How could anyone survive on that?!?

   I know right, i'd really have to cut down my champagne consumption, not sure I could face that.

   I agree with all the other folks working at teaching institutions. If you stay at a 4-3, 3-3, or even a 3-2 school expect your real salary to drop by on average of 1-2% a year until retirement. Upper range for the 4-4 school and lower range for the better ones. The question is “can you do something about this?”

   Obviously the first solution is to move up. If you have the opportunity, of course you should get out ASAP. But most people can’t move up. For these folks the solution—and I see a couple of smart tenured faculties doing this around me—is to make the teaching job an automated part time job. You have to teach two days, right? You teach two days a week for the first two week of classes. After that it becomes one day/week in person and another online using your existing videos. You then give students the option to watch the videos or come to the class. Eventually in week 7-8 of the class no one shows up to the in person session and the class becomes fully online.

   Also, you should not spend a minute on grading. Either use publisher content or a TA if you have one. I see faculties who work less than 50 days a year using these techniques. Then the cr***y pay may be worthwhile. Pay me 150 with no raise and I’ll work 50 days a year and do no research post tenure. Service is always on zoom these days. Just stay mute. Not bad. Now the 150 becomes like an insurance to whatever you’re doing elsewhere. Get involved in house renovation and flipping, become the finance manager of a car dealership (one of our faculties is actually doing this for a large dealership on a “part time” basis but in fact it’s his full time job). This, my friends, is how you handle a low paying dead end teaching job.

   The automation idea would get you fired at my school. If you are at a teaching school, high-quality teaching and student caring/accommodation are 80% of your job. Wanna get out? Less sleep and vacation would be the possible solution.

   My cousin does house flipping in my city, and he makes a lot.

    Why would anyone bother working for as a finance manager for a car dealership?

    It pays as much or more than the teaching job. In large cities they make $200k. You run TVM and give papers to people to sign. About 30 minutes per each car sold. Others do the sales (the hard part) the customer sees you to sign the documents. You may need some ‘certifications’ in some states but it’s quite easy. That said, you must be American or speak good english and have reasonable communication skills.
