   Can you afford a car?

   We’re a “lower Cal State,” whatever that means...not SDSU or CPP. Our 4-4 can be 4-3 with some pubs and even 3-3 with tons of service.
   They don’t list our publications on our site because you’ve never heard of some of the journals.

   I teach 4-4 at my Cal State campus. I can’t afford a house in SoCal and no raises the next couple of years.

   Cal states sound like a rough placement. I was on the committee of a PhD student in another department and I was shocked by her offer- 4-4 with some vague suggestion that there were some duties that could be u set taken in return for a course release. What I thought was odd was that the faculty in her department were listed by name on the website but with no other description of them or their work.

   schools within cal state are very different. some are 3-3 and others may be 4-4

   If you can’t publish at a 15-15 school you probably wouldn’t have published at a 0-3 either. Everyone is busy. Publishing is hard.

   If you can’t publish at a 15-15 school you probably wouldn’t have published at a 0-3 either. Everyone is busy. Publishing is hard.

   This is one of the most incorrect thoughts that people not at teaching schools think. You simply cannot imagine the dumb ways that my administrators and senior colleagues conjure to eat my time. Combine that with considerably reduced access to data and resources (eg, my school doesn’t have an NBER subscription), and getting out is harder than you think.

   I think I am appropriately placed—I’m not good at this—but I would be better at it with different resources. When I took my first sabbatical and only had a 1-1 and no service, I was more than three times as productive.

   the worst part of being at a teaching school isn't the teaching. don't get me wrong, it's a ton of work. but what's worse is being around unmotivated juniors and deadwood seniors. it would be different if time were tight but people used what time they had to innovate in either research or teaching. but your modal teaching school will be staffed by faculty who are incompetent and don't care about improvement. if you are at one of these places you have to work so hard to not let their mediocrity seep into you. you have to pull yourself forward every day and it drains you.

   Yes. I did my undergrad at a CSU and thought they had it real good. I serve on a committee with a guy from the Bio department and his kids qualify for reduced lunch prices at school.

    Who goes to steak houses anymore?

    Perhaps the difference between a tapas restaurant and prix fixe restaurant is more appropriate. Both are very good, but the prix fixe restaurant is clearly fancier.

    The 3-0 would have more resources and would pay better. However, research expectations would be astronomical.

    A 2-2 is more manageable. You still need the occasional A pub, but you can also have a life outside work.

    My opinion is that if you value free time, a 2-2 is ideal. Limited service and teaching obligations and reasonable research expectations. Pay is decent too, just don’t expect to ever make $500k.

    Graduated from an MRM department but got under-placed at a 3-3 teaching school. I thought I could move up but the teaching tasks eat up my time much more than I expected.
    I should have accepted a visiting position at the first place. People keep saying that you can move up but that is a big lie. The limited time and research support literally make it almost impossible to focus on working on good ideas. In my first two years, I felt sorry about myself because all the training I got in my PhD program is wasted. Now, I do not feel sorry about myself anymore because I have gradually accepted my fate.
    My advice is that you should make a choice as soon as possible. If you want to do research but could not get an offer from a research school, get a visiting position, and don't settle down on a teaching school. If you don't want to do research, forget all the things you learned in your PhD seminars and get some hobbies to enjoy your life in a teaching school.

    How much is triple?

    I'm on over 100k USD at a uni in Europe where people mostly hit B journals.
