   Graduated from an MRM department but got under-placed at a 3-3 teaching school. I thought I could move up but the teaching tasks eat up my time much more than I expected.

   I should have accepted a visiting position at the first place. People keep saying that you can move up but that is a big lie. The limited time and research support literally make it almost impossible to focus on working on good ideas. In my first two years, I felt sorry about myself because all the training I got in my PhD program is wasted. Now, I do not feel sorry about myself anymore because I have gradually accepted my fate.

   My advice is that you should make a choice as soon as possible. If you want to do research but could not get an offer from a research school, get a visiting position, and don't settle down on a teaching school. If you don't want to do research, forget all the things you learned in your PhD seminars and get some hobbies to enjoy your life in a teaching school.

   I am talking about my own experience. I have no idea what 2-2 feels like but most 3-3 schools literally have nothing in terms of research support.

   3-3 schools are a complete waste of time. I am at a 3-3 school. Zero research support. I have to buy stata out of pocket. They don't care where you publish as long as they can be found in that so called ABDC List. Colleagues don't care about research. They tell you it is a teaching school. It is a hell on earth as far as research productivity is concerned. I am quitting this year for sure.

    There is a lot of information asymmetry in the job market. When you are fresh out, people may have some hope for you even if you are a lemon. If you work at a 3-3 for several years, people know that you are a lemon. Even if you can publish some good papers, it is still very difficult to move up.

    I am not complaining at all. Actually I said I have accepted my fate.

    I do believe that doing a vising position is a much better strategy than settling on a teaching job.

    I am from Asia. I never thought about other options. Actually all my life I have never left school. Many Asian guys are like this.

    The crying is unbelievable. Op is lemon, you can publish fine at 3-3 if motivated. Teaching a 3/3 is literally a cush 20hr/week job for 30 weeks a year after you have things prepped. Research funds are nice but you don’t need them. Use publicly available data, think of better research ideas that are potential high caliber but not long term time horizon.
