OP, I can tell you one thing. Financial sector is deep down a massive fraud. It is like academia in social sciences. You don't need any skills to get promoted. All you need is good connections
who would no jerb this? set aside the fraud claim and skills requirement, the need for connections is legit. how will you know where the macro is going without connections?

Hello,
I work in London fin sector as an economist. Getting a good job in a good global Macro Fund is next to impossible out of school, unless you come from US top 5.
you could go as a quant. But those jobs dont pay so well and you are competing against stem and CS phds.
Macro Hedge fund economist position require a mix of four sets of skills:
1) Applied Macroeconometrics
2) Insight into policy maker thinking
3) Knowledge of Macro History
4) Know enough about financial markets to make investment recommendation based on 1-3.
Out of school you only know 1.
Need to spend time at top policy institutions to pick up 2 and 3.
Need to spend time in investment banking to learn about markets.
So ideal path is: 5 years policy institution.
2 years IB.You will be competetive for Macro Hedge fund.
Good luck
