   This is true, though 5-10 years in DC and then moving to industry (common move) to any city of your choosing (even more now thanks to remote work and flexible offices), that is more a possibility

   One year later I did it! Private city, not government. Making lots of money, bought a house and finally started my life.

   I’m in a similar position. I’m tired of the bs and frustration and want to f*ck off to industry/gov ASAP, but I also want to go on the market to see what it’s like, for the experience. So I’m waiting till my paper is polished enough

   Me too. Sick of feeling like I'm on the chopping block 24/7. Will go to government and live a normal life in a city of MY choosing.
   

   Yeah, "working in a city of your choosing," "government," and "PhD" are largely incompatible unless the city of your choosing is in the DC area.

   OP, do what you need to do to get the PhD and when you go on the job market, only apply to industry. Econ jobs are plentiful and pay well, and going on the market for industry is infinitely more pleasant than going for academia.
   I’m in govt and it’s great. My friends in industry have great quality of life and work life balance. Some even do research when work is slow (some weeks I barely break 20 hours per work, others go up to 50-60).
   Talk to people you can trust and won’t judge you about all the options. We truly are blessed to have such a good job market.

   Oh but this was really me. I got an industry offer at that time before going on the market. Turns out that accepting that offer was the worst decision in my life.

   I think people should not feel guilty to "move to industry". The problem is that industry, as a whole, is also glamourized by people who never spent time there.

   It is not that is is all-bad, but industry has also its own set of problems that do not register ex-ante for most people whose whole life was spent in academic settings.

    It depends a lot. "Industry" as "everything non-ac and non-government" is a very broad set.

    PhD in Econ, Finance, Account can and often leverage their training and skills to jump-start interesting industry careers. Of course this depends on what the PhD JMC does, specific fields etc.

    The problem I have is that many assume the counterfactual is that the PhD who got industry jobs would have gotten the same jobs straight out of a Masters program, for instance, and have the same career progression afterwards.

    I think many industry-bound JMC are seriously hurt by lack of certain soft skills that are not that difficult to acquire, but are pretty much non-relevant for academic hiring. Sometimes this is baffling, such as MRM candidates who are too recalcitrant to present their work as often as possible during the PhD (which will only work to also improve their professional presentation skills useful for industry). Why people self-sabotage themselves like that?

    This was me. Now I have a better job making more money. Feel a lack of purpose like I will just work for 20 years and then retire, with no goals in between.
