Klenow is another great comeback. Booted from Chicago GSB, then to the Fed, then full prof at Stanford!
Greatest career comeback?

2004: Booted from Chicago GSB with no pubs. (Received BA in 1988 so likely in late 30s at this point.)
I understand why it's common not to list what people with long BA-PhD intervals did in between. But it's also a custom I dislike, this is the very useful info if you want to know about their personalities.
Curious, what kind of insights could knowing the BA-PhD intervals provide about their personality? Are you suggesting determination, things of that nature?

Probably Vladimir Horowitz.
Listen to his Japan concert (where a critic referred to him something like a "cracked antique") then listen to his Moscow comeback that he recorded a few years later. He was in his 80s, and it's one of his most magical performances. He was clearly on meds while in Japan. In any case, I prefer his late 60s live recordings. His Valle Dobermann and Scherzo and March have placed him in my upper eschelon.

It's on his CV.

he had a glorious pipeline and a few R&R and forthcoming when he was contacted by Rochester. Plus people there read the paper and there was no doubt he was a future star
Looks like he got 4 pubs including 1 top 5 before being hired at Rochester with Tenure.
How did he get tenured at Rochester if he had zero pubs two years prior?
Contacts. Connections.
