anyone economist who studies police accountability is part of an anti-white conspiracy apparently. Or maybe there's a simpler explanation....

@haralduhlig
, I sat in your class in Winter 2014:
(1) You talked about scheduling a class on MLK Day
(2) You made fun of Dr. King and people honoring him
(3) You sarcastically asked me in front of everyone whether I was offended
Here is the receipt: @JustinWolfers
@and_joy_

Context: the student sharing this story is black, and likely the only black person in the class. This must have felt like utter sh/t, otherwise he wouldn't remember the incident after six years.I suggest a research project: We look at people living near addresses honoring MLK - Like "Dr. Martin Luther King Boulevard" and compare crime rates, percentage of people with college degrees, joblessness, other socioeconomic indicators - and compare it with the rest of the US...

It’s a fair point you make as for the role that power can play.
For 2, my point is that we’re here discussing ad nausium what was a 5 word sentence and a 3 second moment during a 45-hour course. If you want to be honest and argue that this brief moment changed everything for this student, then we would need some sort of visual and audio recording of the entire class session. Otherwise, it’s highly likely this student and others close to him who likely also collaborated in discussions of the incident may have had their personal views affect their perception and memory of this 3 second moment.Maybe they misremembered exactly what happened. Maybe they let their personal feelings and experiences colour how they interpreted what happened. I don't really care; it had a negative impact on at least one person, and that's something worth recognising.

Microagressions are not a fire-able offense. We could go through a counter-checklist that gives examples of how people of minority genders and races also commit microaggressions against white men.
Also, it's suspicious that:
1) the example of calling a black guy out in the middle of class to speak on a black issue (like MLK day) is a very textbook example of a microaggression, and
2) the same person making the complaint had had "police accountability" as their main research focus since they left U of Chicago years ago.Perhaps. I don't think it is insane, though, to suggest that the standards are higher for roles of institutional leadership vs just being a professor.
And what exactly are you suggesting re: number 2? That he's literally making the entire experience up to try to bandwagon the current political climate? If not, why is his research focus relevant here?It’s a fair point you make as for the role that power can play.

There is a professor at Harris corroborating that BB shared this incident with him at the time. In any case, what kind of context would make this behavior okay? Please do enlighten me!

HU placed on leave from JPE just now
The Advisory Board of the Journal of Political Economy has placed Harald Uhlig on leave from his role as editor of the Journal pending a determination of the Board as to whether it would be appropriate for him to continue in that role given recent accusations of discriminatory conduct in a University classroom setting.

Seems true. He is no longer in the list of visiting scholars there: https://www.chicagofed.org/people/resident-and-visiting-scholars
