How do you keep confidence when 0 flyout?

What kind of schools schedule late flyouts? Why would there by such a delay? Looks like schools of all ranks have already called for flyouts.
Schools with multiple searches. They may want to do their IO flyouts before their Macro flyouts for example. Or focus on filling their senior opening before junior flyouts. Many such reasons.
I had no flyouts until late January. Still got a job at a top 60 US school.

Many schools have flyout schedules for three weeks or even longer than one month. This could be because of multiple positions, admin reasons (in many social science departments, flying two persons or even one person out per week is common), or second-round flyout.

Do they also have better brands?
This is how I am feeling OP! I actually looked up the seminars of the target schools. I am not an experienced researcher but it looked like the quality of many where comparable to my profile. I concluded that it is more of a fit. They might have specific fields, research interests or teaching that meet the department needs, better connections to the department or expressed the kind of interest that we couldn't convey. I wouldn't take it personally. You got good interviews because of your profile and you did your best, the rest is not really in your hand!
Fingers crossed...we all end up somewhere content! -
OP, don't despair. Someone on the market this year that I know personally had 10 flyout invitations, cancelled one already, and will likely cancel more as it is very likely that they will get offers before they reach the mid of their flyout list. And since offers come with a deadline, it's very likely the market will start clearing in the second half of January. From my experience on the market (two times), about 30% of employers go for more flyouts in February. So there is still hope.

Some do but many are in similar range! The market is way more competitive that we imagine!

This goes to show that few candidates get most of the flyouts and the rest are left out of the process!

Thank you so much for typing these down, it helps me a lot from being desperate

I'm not so sure. I've got a whole bunch of LRM and one MRM flyout, meaning that I'm in a different market to the people getting the HRM flyouts. While I agree that some schools are delusional, it appears that most schools know roughly the kind of candidate they have a chance of hiring.

I didn’t suggest that all the stars were getting LRM flyouts as well. The market is segmented and within each market, a few candidates get all the flyouts. I guess you would be the star of LRM segment then...congratulations!

Will here's your problem. You don't even understand which side of the labor market is supply and which is demand! Your poor economic knowledge was probably signaled in interviews.
Yes, for each school, demand is always higher than supply. Even the strongest candidate from a HRM may fail to get a flyout from a particular school.
But if fail on all schools.........it's hard to believe that I am still good.....i hear ya. But if they interview 25 ppl for one position but can only invite 3 for (first) flyout, it is not hard to see why they dont fly you out even if you feel good about the interview.
I also heard that schools diversify the candidate profiles in terms of ranking because 1. risk averse or 2. diversify requirement by HR. If it is the former case, you still have a chance.

I got AEA interviews from some decent schools. Some of them are ranked much higher than my PhD institution. So I was confident of getting a job. I felt well in all my interviews. They went better than all my practice interviews.
But still get no flyout.
Maybe the market is much more competitive than I thought. Or maybe I am far away from a strong candidate, even though my interview list looks nice. I should concentrate on my work now but I could not, because I start to think I am just incapable of doing research in econ.
Some of my target schools post their job talk seminars. I am afraid of looking at the profiles of those candidates. I may completely lose confidence if I realize that they are all much stronger than me.
How can I pick up my confidence and resolution......Learn English?
