   Academic jobs are said to be "prestigious". What does that really mean? Do academics get more respect from people? Do people listen to you more and take your opinions more seriously? Won't these things fade away in long term interactions with people as they get to know you more?

   It is about how you feel about yourself more than anything else. You feel good about your job and proud to say that you are a professor. That means it is prestigious to you. At least that is how I see it.

    Obviously it's a nice feeling if people react positively after they learn what you do. It probably matters more for those people whose parents never accepted them/always criticized them.
    But depends on the country whether professors are respected.
