No. You can get an exception to the data policy as long as you make programs available, since qualified researchers can always get access to the data.

I don't care much for the US, but I imagine learning about the US should at least interest the US population, which is 65 times that of Norway. There are probably other people interested about the US outside the US as well. Does anyone care about Norway, other than the 5 million Norwegians?

no, norwegians are primarily, well, norwegians. external validity is actually very hard to establish. i wish the quasi-experiment/RCT crowd would take it a bit more seriously.

Hasn’t enough work been done in s**thole countries? Isn’t it time to look to places like Norway?
The only scam lies in using proprietary datasets that make research non-replicable or which can lead to selection bias (maybe the owner of the dataset will refuse to allow results to be published if this leads to bad PR - only "good" results are published).
This is just a questionable editorial choice (if so) and obtaining rents from data ownership.
Anyway yes, this is the problem with most of econ, regardless of the norway criticism. You 'proved' causality in a particular sample, but the qualitative effects are often obvious, and the quantitative results cannot be generalized out of that sample.

This Norwegian data scam is a clear example of everything that's wrong with the profession: cliques who can seize power in journals and become very powerful, focus on narrow questions that are not interesting but publishable, rent extraction not based on superior talent but on access to data/connections, ....
