   About every second paper in JPE/QJE is about Norwegian data. What do we learn from this? Is the purpose of economics as a field to make policy recommendations valid exclusively in Norway?

   Silly you with your external validity concerns. If it works for a homogeneous country of 5M people with 2nd highest gdp per capita in the world and a sovereign wealth fund of over $1T and 1.3% of worldwide assets...it must work everywhere. It's just like how research on Sumo wrestler corruption applies to all corruption contexts...

   Magne and Bertil beg to disagree with you, while preparing the next issue of JPE that will feature two articles by Magne and two by Bertil...

   Since his PhD in 1995, he published mainly philosophy and papers in things like Social Choice & Welfare. Until the early 2010s, he published a handful of papers in top fields or better. Then he becomes editor of MS, and has 5 papers in that journal (including a current R&R). Then he becomes editor of JPE, and has 4 papers R&R at that journal. This is insane - and look at the papers, it is not like there is any real qualitative difference from the early work. "Exercise Improves Academic Performance" - an RCT on exercise and academic achievement? In the JPE? Come on now.

   Go through the empirical work in the papers that include shared data. You will see that the empirical work is crap. Results are mined and not robust.

   Look at this, for example:

   The results disappear if you do a sensible empirical analysis.

    The author didn't do enough exercises so his academic performance declined.

    My feeling is that the scam is slowly receding. Other than Mogstad and JPE, I see much fewer Norwegian data pubs in top journal now than, say, 3 or 4 years ago. People seem to have understood, at last....

    Sweden is different from Norway. While Norway is indeed a country of oil-rich potato farmers, Sweden is a start up hub. On a per capita basis it has the most VC capital in Europe, startups, it exports culture, industry giants. Think of .ikea, saab (massive military exports), Volvo, Ericsson, Spotify, AstraZeneca, Tetrapak, Skype, etc. all of are at least part Swedish. Swedes are also huge in Hollywood, given the small size of their country. They are also early technology adopters. I would argue that Sweden is very representative for other developed economies. It is a market based economy with a bigger and efficient state, granted. But as a fraction of GDP the state is not bigger than in other Western European countries.
    

    Funny. When I ask people working with Norwegian or Swedish data how they review papers from researchers that have no access to such data, they all claim that all they care is causality. And, of course, unless you have the administrative data of Scandi quality, you cannot prove causality 99% of the times.
