    40 hours of real, actual work (lunch breaks, talking to your peers etc. does not count) if you are well prepared. More, sometimes much more if you are not.

    i go through phases. 0 hours of studying most weeks, then some weeks 60+ hours. probably would be better to do some smoothing, but oh well.

    Any thing more than 3 hours per day solid, indicates that you are not going to cut it for PhD.

    40 hrs/week is meaningless study, it just indicates that you have ADS or low IQ etc.

    I see mathematicians often say that the upper bound is 6 hours per day. But yeah, I can also accept 5 hours of real, actual work. No less than that, though. More than 8 hours per day of actual work is just not realistic.
