Thinking of making theoretical models based on my empirics and gut feelings when reading about the scenario but pretty lost on how to begin doing so.
How to get better in theory as regmonkey?

What you need is math skills, not econ ones since you already have econ under your belt.
Problems solved.OP here: So actually I have a solid analysis background (took classes up to measure theory) from undergrad. My issue is setting up models, having a sense of whether they're tractable or not (this would be optimization theory right?), which assumptions are necessary and reasonable, and how to embed interesting and not trivial insights and tradeoffs.

Read MWG page by page
Are you serious or just kidding? Why do you think reading MWG carefully would help in developing modeling skills?
OK, serious answer (although essentially repeating what has been said above). Writing economic models requires exactly the same thing as doing good applied work, namely experience. The way to get experience is also similar: work on a smaller problem, improve, listen to smart colleagues, read around. Working through (specific parts of) MWG certainly helps by giving you the tools to write your own models. But this is something you should have even before you start and also something you can pick elsewhere.

"Theory" in the social sciences is BS. Worry about causality and model specifications. Everything else is work for the Philosophy department.

What kind of useless opinion is this, WHY ARE YOU ON AN ECON FORUM

LOL. When I was a bit younger I would have written a paragraph or two to point out what is dumb about this dumb post, but instead I'll just laugh instead.
