Could someone please shed some light on the negotiation process following the Ruf? What is okay to ask, what is not. Material available online is very vague and general to offer much insight. Danke.

Germany is corrupt
Post On 4, I meant what pubs are necessary to get into 2nd stage. Completely irrelevant? I get pubs are unimportant in Germany, but honestly doubt it is that extreme. Why else do professors at the better places tend to consistently have better pubs? And is there really zero incentive to be Stefan Homburg or Roman Inderst rather than deadwood in Germany? Re Habilitation, is the implication that someone with Habilitation will always be preferred over someone without? If that's the case, then there is obviously no hope for foreign PhDs. 1) professors have the majority, in addition PhD students, post docs, secretaries, Ugrads, HR people. Don't count on the professors all being from the advertised field. Could be any member of a particular faculty. 2) Likeability. Just get it: no one in Germany cares about pubs. 3) in BWL still better to have it. Not de jure necessary. 4) see 2); you do not have a chance. Senior professor in both Germany and the U.S. OP - thank you very much for this very informative post. May I ask some questions: 1) Who sits in the Berufungskommissionen? E.g. Say there is a position in marketing, then will the members be other German professors in marketing, or fellow BWL professors in the same department? Or both? 2) So in the 2nd stage, it's all about like ability? Pubs become irrelevant? Even for Mannheim or Frankfurt, who have quite a few guys with top pubs? 3) Is a Habilitatiion still expected? 4) At what stage does a US PhD have a decent chance at W3? E.g. an accounting guy with good US PhD, 4 years out and 3 top 3 pubs and nothing else? Anything else that would help on a CV? Thanks a lot in advance!
