How to humiliate or mock a sociologist?

Sociologist here. Let me help you guys out, since you seem to be struggling. Taking shots at our crappy quant method skills is partially effective, but at some level we don't really give a s**t about the inadequacy of reg y x since we try to solve the identification problem by triangulating across different types of data. If you want to hit us where it hurts, point out that sociology is theoretically tribalistic and has lacked any kindof theoretical unity since Parsons was demolished in the '60s and '70s, and we can't even agree on foundational issues like the definition of an "institution" or the relationship between structure and agency.

By "triangulation" you mean, "s**t, I haven't the slightest clue why these pvalues are bouncing around the way they are, but here's some stories that seem right and look over here at some concepts we made up so that we have stuff to write about anyway."

Yeah, I'm mad at the bulls**tters who leverage copouts like this.

Is it not true that economists are a type of sociologist? There is already a large wedge between these fields so why widen the gap? We have a lot to learn from our less "mathematically based" friends and if we keep the door open then they might also learn from us thereby making our profession more influential. After all, what good are we if we only talk to ourselves?

what do you mean talk to ourselves? go tell me if there are any economists in, oh i dunno, the government, central banks, retail/investment banks, firms, NGO's, think tanks etc. now go tell me how many sociotards there are in these places?

OP, their true weak point is their lack of scientific method. Read Karl Popper, and the foundations of econ research with Friedman. In theoretical grounds, just read what Becker wrote. They lack math because they never introduced basic notions such as marginality. They are artisans, not scientists.

Anytime somebody mocks the methods or whatever of economics, my retort is something of the form, 'Thanks for your concern. What do you suggest we do differently?' If they don't have the sense to shut up and suffer a couple moments of embarrassing silence, you can completely humiliate them with your follow up questions as you expose their ignorance of economics and scientific methodology in general.
If you really hate them, start off by saying 'You're right that economics is far from perfect...' This will stoke their confidence and they'll be unable to resist the urge to offer all sorts of inane opinions, most of which will be poorly paraphrased from blog posts they've read.

Ask him about the percentage of his recent grads who are employed. Followup with a question on the level of debt his recent grads have accrued, paticularly the students of color.
Finish by asking how successful he and his fellow sociologists were in Occupy Wall Streets efforts to "end income inequality, racism and rigged institutions."
If he can't see the irony, then LOL. Hard.

Just give them a change to speak. It does not take long for them to say something really stupid. Then use that to destroy them. Finally, enjoy the look of dispair and confusion on their faces.
