   Yeah, I would give up being in the cool club just to be myself. So much more worth it than being anxious if the people around me like me or not. Like the person said, be okay with yourself, and the right people will find you.

   OP, I really think most people in the profession don't care about cultural stereotypes. Plus, the few westerners who think they're too cool for Asians are people no one would want to spend a second with. At any rate, the most important thing in life is to be yourself.

   Talk to people who look nervous and alone. They will be relieved to talk to you. Once you have done this quite a few times you will find it easier and you will be building many familiar faces. As these contacts get to know others, they can introduce you to larger groups. When I go to conferences now I have too many people that I know from previous years that I cannot even catch up with all of them.

   Another advice is if you do end up talking to someone and you form a professional connection to never turn it into a personal one.

   yes we need to keep the tradition of economists having no friends alive, it's not hat hard really.

   Keeping the tradition alive but also not creating trouble anywhere I go. It is ok to have friends but not friends from the field.

   Most in this thread are trying to appear nice but I will tell byou what is really going on.

   A lot of us avoid Asians for 3 reasons

   1 we can't understand you. Your pronunciation is bad, especially L vs R. I have a PhD student who only socializes with Asians and after 4 years in the program is still incomprehensible. Writing is worse

   2 you mostly fixate on math and have no idea how the real world works. I'm refereeing another Asian paper this weekend and it is painfully disconnected from reality

   3 you cheat more than others. This i know from my undergrad classes and it's not even close

   I haven't heard of Asians feeling not accepted. That's the first time I hear such a thing. During conferences you seem like you interact with each other and with people from other nationalities.

   What kind of nonesense is this, what I observed at conferences are people are in cliques even by their nationalities. To infer what undergreads do to phds at a conference, I mean you don't sound smart.

    Just directly go to talk with the one u r interested. U r junior so some tiny improper behavior might be ignored. Most scholars are not that mean like ejmr ppl.
