That's the point. Most Dutch universities are overrated and treat foreign students as cash cows. This thread is to warn potential students who may have been fooled by the self propaganda of Dutch universities and potential job candidates who think they can do well here.
I hate the Dutch culture

Dude, thats the same everywhere else for the masters...Look at BGSE/Bocconi/ any UK uni... Why on earth would any foreign government pay for your MSc?
And for the PhD they just showed you that it's different.
Now stop whining go and finish your problem sets -
This comment just reveals pure ignorance about the Netherlands.
Ti (3 unis) plus tilburg is all there is I thought? The rest is so crappy you should be happy to get a job at walmart..Name one place with a decent grad school. Utrecht? Groningen? Maastricht? All very poor and unorganized for phd. The other places don't even have serious faculty.

LOL. Thanks dutchbro.
Everyone knows the Dutch are culturally the most closed and racist in europe (excepting perhaps the Swiss).
List of countries from most to least racist in Western Europe:
Netherlands
Switzerland
Italy
Austria
Portugal
Spain
Ireland
Germany
France (if you speak french)
Belgium
UK. My experience is the the Dutch are culturally one of the most open and accepting nation, where you probably have the best chances of integrating after the UK.

So in a very very small country you can count 7 decent universities in economics, sounds good to me... There are other places like Wageningen, Eindhoven, Delft, Enschede, which are world class in their niche fields, and in particular Delft is world famous in engineering, what do you want more ???

As discussed before, this is their culture. They have a very unhealthy relationship with money. Not necessarily they deliberately do this. They grow up in such an environment where everybody takes care of their own business and have to guard themselves. If you do not complain against them, they think you agree with it. A non-Dutch person needs to be really assertive and blunt to be able to survive here.
i have a dutch colleague. OPs words describe him to a tee. Cheap. Stingy. Embarrassingly tight. if he can take advantage of someone else, he does.
until OPs post, I just thought it was because he is a selfish a$$ whole. -
It is a small country indeed, but the population (17 million) is not that small. Other comparable (in terms of area or popular) countries like Japan, Australia, and Switzerland are doing even better than NL in terms of higher education and science/research in general. There is really no need to boast the great achievements of Dutch universities, although I do concede that Dutch people are very good at marketing everything of them.

I learned of this from my own experience. Quite a few times my Dutch colleagues stepped too far into my comfort zone and I had to tell them this is enough. Personally I call this behavior taking advantage of other people's kindness and generosity and I despite this very much.

Unfortunately, I agree with this.

I apologize for my people. Dutch people generally have low inhibitions and little to no understanding of subtext. I don't think there is intent to take advantage of people, it's just that they are used to communicating in a very direct (confronting) manner. You need to be quite blunt to them, the good thing is generally they can handle it.

My landlord entered my apartment without any information not once but twice in my absence.
One social worker entered my house without invitation or ringing the doorbell and just walked around my house saying 'hello is anybody in here' like it was her property
It is one thing to be socially awkward, another to be deliberately obnoxious. The Dutch are the latter.

How is Japan comparable in terms of population or area to the Netherlands ... are you deranged?
Australia is about 170 times larger (in area) than the Netherlands... weird trolling

It is a very small coutry getting a lot of complains of its rude, cheap, and uncivilized people.

Many came for economic reasons, many came because people say Dutch are friendly, open minded and tolerant, which is hardly the case. Visiting tourist cities like Amsterdam and The Hague for a couple of days will unlikely give you the true idea of what this country and it's people are like. One has to listen to those who have lived here for a while and have in depth experience with this culture. Too many superficial impressions of this country. My Dutch colleagues once said Amsterdam is not the true Holland and the red light districts exist only for foreigners.
The Netherlands may be a paradise for some. But it is always useful to listen to these critical opinions before one plans to move here.
It is a very small coutry getting a lot of complains of its rude, cheap, and uncivilized people.
Now we have to wonder what compelled the complainers to move to that very small, almost underwater, densely populated country, if it svcks so much.

Why do so many end up staying? To me this is simply revealed preferences vs. stated preferences.
