   They are bloody cheap and stingy, which is fine to me. What really annoys me is so many Dutch people like to take advantage of others especially foreigners. No minimal sense of sharing or reciprocating. The list of cases go to no end:

   1. Vendors at the open market deliberately give you the wrong change. When you question it, they give the right amount back to you right away.

   2. People at work place deliberately withhold information on your deserved benefits. When you confront them, they say "why don't you ask!"

   3. Candies and fruits I left in office drawers were missing. Happened quite a few times.

   4. If you are lucky with a Dutch treat, they "offer" you one biscuit, only one, while holding the biscuit jar to their chest. But when you treat them, they eat as much as they can until they burp in public.

   5. Plagiarism is so common in Dutch universities. They call it collaboration.

   6. One of my Dutch colleagues once said blatantly that she likes employees from Asian and African countries because they never take vacation.

   Lol, bro.

   They have lived for thousands of years in place under the level of the sea. Before the dikes I think they lived in stilt houses. So to say, they don't even a the land on which to exist since the sea constantly tries to claim it back. Despite this they built a huge commercial empire. It is understandable if they are a little bit cheap. Plus they were invaded repeatedly by foreigners.

   Netherlands is great, best year of my life was there. Dutch culture is relax and friendly, they never rush anything, they smile in the streets, they are helpful when asked for help, and almost everyone knows English. Horrible cuisine though, they just boil everything. There seem to be an anti Dutch bro in Ejmr today, interesting. However, I was in an elite academic circle and/also in a cheerful migrant circle so I didn’t have any connections with Dutch supremacists. Maybe if I had encountered them I would be hateful too, racists ruin everything in every country. But at least there is no discrimination in daily level, which is not the case for most if the developed world.

   When I was a student there, I was falsely accused of trying to immigrate illegally. I was also told to go back to my home country and stay there by my university's administration.

   Also, one of my Dutch profs kept getting triggered by random things. I had to fill a form out which had two choices. I picked one of the two choices. He berated me for not picking the other choice as he thought that was more suitable. Also, this sheet of paper had a slight fold because I kept it in my bag. He got offended by the fold as well and said, this paper is folded! As if it were a huge crime. The Dutch are stingy sadists by nature. Avoid at all costs, especially if you are not white.

You also mentioned you were in an elite academic circle and a cheerful migrant circle, which differ dramatically from the common Dutch circle. Had you stayed here longer and talked to expats who have lived here at least for a couple of years, you would probably have a different view of the so-called Dutch tolerance (and their culture as a whole), which is at best one-way tolerance. Dutch colleagues taking advantage of you, random Dutch people shouting at you in streets for no reason, Dutch neighbours complaining you putting down your curtains during the day, etc, you have to accept all those as their culture. Meanwhile, they gossip behind you or even comment openly on other cultures with little sense of respect: British and Americans are so hypocrite, Belgians are stupid, Chinese people all work at restaurants ...

    If you think being honest about my experience with and options of the Dutch is something racist, then all Dutch people are racists because they are so proud of being honest!

    Back a few years ago, a Canadian/Chinese lady shared her stories with the Dutch. Read and see whether you would call her racist.

    You are right I only lived there one year, it might have been different if I stayed longer I don’t know. But in other parts of Europe where I have spent (much less) time as a tourist I have experienced racism directly so I always cherished Netherlands (against Belgium, France, Germany). But yeah its a possibility if I spent more time I would see their true nature too (if thats really the case). Moreover I should add I have fair skin (even though I am actually from Middle East) so its harder for racists to realize they should attact me too :D

    I dont know if your case is the exception or mine but I am sorry you had to go through those things, I hope future would hold better things for you OP. But maybe this is what the whole world looks like, and every culture severly discriminate against the others, and we just sometimes get lucky to not to encounter them. I don’t know of course, I can only hope thats not true.

    Thank you for understanding. It is really frustrating for me and my friends to go through these Dutch things on a regular basis.

    You are right I only lived there one year, it might have been different if I stayed longer I don’t know.     I’ve been living in Holland for 7 months.
    The Dutch are OK. They’re sometimes annoyingly cynical and blunt, but other than that, they’re nice.
    Everyone speaks English and they’re willing to help when you need. I’ve never encountered any racist comments —and I’m Turkish, btw.
    I’m not quite sure if I’d want to live in Holland forever, but it’s actually a good place for expats. Also, traveling is easy. Especially the railway system is perfect!
