   Germany is prosperous BECAUSE it is obedient to the United States, or rather because it belongs to the so-called "Atlantic Alliance". West Germany's post-War prosperity (and East Germany's post-Cold-War prosperity) comes precisely from this. If you want to see what a Soviet-dominated Germany or Western Europe could have looked like, one needs to look no further than the Warsaw Pact Communist countries, including Russia itself. Now, I don't think it necessarily had to be this way, that the post-war market economy had to be as successful as it was in Western Europe (the Western European countries could have gotten stuck in a middle-income equilibrium), but so it was.

    Just read the Hersh piece. Nice story but I still dont get why the US should have done it.

    Russia stopped any gas exports to Germany anyway. NS2 was never used and put off by German authorities. 27th the war and sanctions, Germany moved on to get away from gas, even with peace, gehabt could have not just traded with Russia as before.

    Why take the risk and blow up infrastructure of an allied country for no or little gain? US has significant military presence in Germany, important for their intervention in the middle East and Afghanistan. Any proof that the US is behind it will pave the way to the end of US presence in Germany.

    Two points for Boris to chew on:

    1) the Hersh report was mentioned in the German press, there is no conspiracy to suppress it. It just didn’t get much attention.
    2) I read the Hersh report and it’s a compelling story, but without any solid proof. He depends mostly on anonymous sources that cannot be checked (given the secret nature of the operation) and for allegations this serious more is required.
