   Really surprised that there are no consequences for GV. Going around giving seminars etc. reading the critique paper, the errors are much more than honest mistakes. Why is everyone pretending that nothing happened?
   I am not bothered by the seniors. In other fields, seniors also don’t check the detailed work of junior co-authors. In medicine or any other discipline with a lab structure, the senior co-author may just be the head of the lab who contributed nothing except for resources. No, I am puzzled about GV.

   He has TWO JF forthcoming...has anyone replicated those results?
   

   Those two papers were published online in 2020. JF probably accepted them in 2019 or early 2020, so, before the retraction of GV's latest paper. They are forthcoming, waiting for a volume and issue only. IOW, they are still fair game for replication.

   Moreover, on the JF page, when you browse among forthcoming papers, you find none of those two papers in the list...

Seniors are incentivized not to check anything -- ideally literally never seeing any snippet of data or code -- so that they can claim ex-post ignorance.

   Clearly, the rule has to be that everyone bears 100% responsibility for fraud, and there are no exceptions.

   Apart from your comment having nothing to do with ~mechanism design~, it is based on a false premise that this is the norm, when in reality, juniors are more than happy to strategically partner up with seniors to decrease desk rejec changes, or rejections after first round; to enter seminars (where they end up presenting), or simply to capitalize on the senior's name.

   Very likely. This is an opportunity not to be missed. You can get your name out there by just doing a careful attempt at replication and finding fraud.Or, if you do replicate, at leastd you've got some good research experience.

   Most papers use central bank data that are hard to access. This makes their replication impossible.

   Apart from your comment having nothing to do with ~mechanism design~, it is based on a false premise that this is the norm, when in reality, juniors are more than happy to strategically partner up with seniors to decrease desk rejec changes, or rejections after first round; to enter seminars (where they end up presenting), or simply to capitalize on the senior's name.

   Both of you are presenting only half the story. In reality,

   (1) You are correct: juniors are more than happy to strategically partner up with seniors for many reasons and typically approach seniors rather than vice versa.

   (2) Other guy is also correct too: seniors do say things like 'we *should* find empirical results of the following form, wink wink' such that juniors are pressured to find results (or else the seniors lose interest and leave the project) and the seniors are incentivized not to check anything.

   Senior’s wish is an instrumental variable. It doesn’t affect results directly, but through the junior’s cheating efforts. So, the senior can shake off any responsibility.

    Of course, they do not appear anymore. They were already published online AND with volume and issue, dude! Replicators can go after him on one of those two papers nonetheless, "The value of central clearing". He was alone in that one. Imagine what he might have invented in that paper!

    I think that it is very interesting. You cheat and you still get to keep your job. Like Gold Medal winners from Kasachstan who lost them a few years after and still get a job at the government
